Not enough difference to justify the extreme price difference IMHO.
$1000 now is like about $500 a decade ago, yet, customer still expect lenses to sell $500, but Japanese companies can't make it, they all have to pay Japanese personnel at the price of Japanese Yen.

A crop of the longitudinal CA so you don't have to hit their servers so badly.

Unfortunately, when you make all your cameras backward compatible you run the risk of your newer lenses competing directly with your older lenses and not faring well in the value equation.

I also feel this way, I currently have the fa 1.4 and F 1.7 and I'd been eyeing the 50 macro for the stellar sharpness.
Yes, agreed. I have three 50mm that give me really good quality sharp images, at the image sizes/displays that I want - the FA50 f1.4, the A50 f1.7 and a Sigma macro 50mm f2.8. Add my smc DA40 Limited and I am quite satisfied at that focal length.

The latest article on DA lens compatibility gave the DA 55 poor marks wide open, but I would like to have seen it included.
Using the DA*55 almost every time i use my camera, next to the FA*85, both are very similar in covering the sensor and vignetting.

for the corner to corner sharpness, it's more about field curvature of the focus zone, than really sharpness. because f1.4 is very good, and from f1.6 it's very sharp. I don't really care of f5.6, because almost any lens is shar at that value.
