Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I've updated the original post!
Why did you use corn oil rather than one of the adhesives available for this purpose?

It was the only thing I had on-hand and have heard that cooking oil is a suitable, albeit temporary, solution to epoxy/balsam separation. Of course it won't be permanent, but it'll be interesting how long it lasts

Yes they are (the soft one is before and the sharper one is after). I just received some UV optical adhesive in the mail, so I'll be replacing it with proper optical adhesive shortly. Corn oil worked well when I went shooting a few days ago. Optically everything was quite sharp, albeit, I'm not much of a pixel-peeper and just shoot casually. I would recommend corn oil as a short-term solution if you have a separating/separated lens element until you find something more appropriate.

Here are some photos I took with the corn-oil [A7, Raw converted to jpeg]. I'll try to provide an update on the adhesive application process soon. I don't think aligning it is as difficult as others say it is as there is a metal ring that holds the element in place in the lens.

You were lucky many doubles have no alignment guides.
