The places where I seem to be lacking are a good ultra-wide angle prime or zoom and an AF macro;

I plan to sell # 4, 5, 9, 12, and 13, soon, to free up some home space.

You may want to try looking at the Marketplace for some deals though that would mean you won't be using the gift certificate.

If you are getting rid of those listed above, the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM (not the OS version) is a much better lens (its in the Current Zoom Lenses in this forum) . I replaced my Pentax zoom kit lenses in that range, very similar to what you are looking to get rid of, with this and it is an awesome upgrade. You can probably get a good copy for between $220 and $300 in the Marketplace or elsewhere.

I'm planning on selling the 18-55, as it's too slow. I want a zoom for indoor use, and the 18-50 doesn't really get me there in darker fluorescent, etc. The 10-20 is 3.5, but the 17-50 is 2.8 across, and that seems like it would give me much better indoor / low light performance.

If I was comparing the 10-20 and 17-50, I wouldn't be considering 3.5 vs 2.8 (which imo is a wash, given you would have to stop down on both anyway). They are very different focal lengths.

But if you're really looking for better indoor low-light (handheld?) performance what you might need is a better camera? The newer models like the KP and K1 – allow you to shoot at much much higher ISOs (so you'll get a faster shutter), and will far exceed what you will get with a 3.5 vs 2.8 aperture difference. Or consider getting into flash photography

The lens choices there are limited for Pentax. The choices other than various Sigma options are:

1. Pentax DA-L 18-55
2. Pentax 50-200
3. Pentax 18-35 f/4 - 5.6
4. Pentax 55-300 f/4-5.8

That's it for _any_ other K-Mounts, other than a wide variety of Sigma lenses.

I may just buy a Sigma that has the best rate of return, and sell it immediately.

I think, in the end, you're right. I could always try to bargain them down from $6,999 for the Sigma 800mm f/5.6 prime...but I have my doubts they'd go for it. :P

Nothing against the 17-50, but as Rogerstg mentioned, you seemed to have that range covered.

A prime like the DA50/1.8 is still faster (and lighter) than a zoom, which of course is more versatile.
My pick would be a prime (obviously for me the fast 20/1.8 since i have the 70), but many would pick the 10-20.


There is no wrong pick among the 4 choices.

Good question. However, then 12/14 will need to be fed regardless. :P

You could always wait for some discounts and get maybe an 18-35/1.8 (although they're known to fail sometimes). All the light you'll ever need.
I would keep the 55/1.8 and get an appropriate film body to go with it.
I'd only jump on the 20/1.8 if I knew I was getting a FF or film body to go with it.
Another option would be to negotiate the gift card with someone who's looking to buy something they have and get something completely different.
