Anyone have any guess on what the lag time is before these would actually ship? I've got a trip to Costa Rica in April and this might be nice to bring as a landscape option.

According to the Ricoh site, they will begin to ship the end of February. (From my pre-order)

Being able to pair this with my DA17-70 or DA20-40 will complete my wide end line up.

I'll be there in April too. Maybe I'll run into you!
It's a family vacation but I kind of want to bring a DSLR too, just in case.
I am even toying with bringing my old K100D just because I enjoy shooting with it as long as there is plenty of light.

It is an APS-C lens, not full frame.

But it can be used on the K-1, in APS-C mode, or in full frame with the possibility of vignetting.

I'm pretty sure it works at the long end on FF without vignette. But I definitely wouldn't buy this as a lens for the K-1.

You can easily use it on the K-1 from 16-18 and 15 w/o hood.

An initial serie of captures you can see in my post Show us your HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mmf:2.8 DC AW images. - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com.

Peoples mind is often restricted by what they read or what the products are announced for.

It's a lot of budget I invest. So, I often like to ask what else can I do with products I buy and get out of them. With Pentax APS-C lenses it's pretty easy to find out the real boundaries if you own a K-1.

The *11-18 has a wide filter thread of 82mm. That's the reason why from the moment the lens was announced I thought it would be a real alternative compared to the 15-30. For me it is since I don't really need 11-14 at FF. So I bought it for usage with the K-1 in FF mode and my APS-C cameras.

Everything depends on your own demands. For me it's sufficient to use it with an angle of view (width/height/diagonal) of 99°/76°/109° (15mm w/o hood) between 89°/66°/99° (18mm). Vignetting is easy to manage at these focal lengths - at least using Capture One Pro and at the moment I don't have any problems with the image quality I get.

I guess in the next days I'll go out with the K-1/DA*11-18 combo. If so, I'll post some additional images.

It's (barely) usable on full frame from about 15mm, and (almost) decent at 18mm. If you want to buy an expensive lens to give you mushy corners and heavy vignetting then fine, use it on full frame.

It's BRILLIANT on crop over its whole zoom range.

Lots of shots (including tests on the K-1 with the hood off) HERE

Thanks! - Nice images. But let's don't see it "black & white".

If your workflow is raw and FF based you get a lot more than what is obvious through changing between FF, (FF) Square and APS-C mode.

Here are my "grey tones" ... by example via cropping a 18mm capture (based on my calculations) ...

| Virtural FL | width px | height px | Megapixel | APS-C equivalent
___________________________________________________
| __20mm_ |___6624 |____4421 |_____29.28 |_________13mm
| __21mm_ |___6309 |____4210 |_____26.56 |_________14mm
| __24mm_ |___5520 |____3684 |_____20.34 |_________16mm
| __27.5mm | __4817 |____3215 |_____15.49 |_________18mm

Many things depend on our personal demands and flexibility ...

P.s. Does anybody know how we can create good looking tables within posts?

This might be a stupid question, but is the lens an IF lens (like the 50-135) or does it extend while zooming/focusing. I am watchind this lens closely as i am a lens or two (sale) away from ordering one, and i am at the moment undecided (more because of the price than anything else).

At the "optical front" within the outer housing I can see an inner tube that moves slightly in and out while zooming. From outside I can't recognize any movement while focusing.

It is internal focus and internal zoom. [edit]well, nearly internal zoom [/edit]

I suspect that augurs well for its weather sealing vs the DFA15-30, which is not internal zoom, and is also only designated as WR rather than AW.
