Never thought about using the DA*11-18 in combination with composition adjustment. But now somehow I instantly was interested. So a boring test has to be done. Look at this glorious subject.
Questions:
1. Will the DA*11-18 show dark corners when I choose K-1 FF mode and 18mm?
2. For many subjects I like 4:3 ratio (like that of the 645Z) more than 3:2. How much pixel increase do I get when expanding the image sensor size by composition adjustment for 3:2 and 4:3 crops?
Here we go - the simple experiment recipe:
1. Make four corner images (upper-left, upper-right, lower-right and lower-left) and put them together automatically using PTGui.
2. Crop the image size of the PTGui result to 4:3 and 3:2 ratio.
i. A single standard FF image. 3:2 standard: 7360 x 4912px = 36 152 320 px => ~ 36 MP
ii. Four corner composition adjustment and PTGui computed "panorama" image - 2 columns, 2 rows: 7981 x 5507 px = 43 951 367 px => ~ 44 MP
iii. PTGui computed "panorama" image - cropped to 4:3 ratio: 7343 x 5507px = 40 437 901 px => ~ 40 MP. Still an advantage for 645Z (53 MP) but a little less and on par with 645D (40 MP). I think the DFA25mm is the widest MF Pentax lens. This image shows wider angles.
iv. PTGui computed "panorama" image - cropped to 3:2 ratio: 7981 x 5321px = 42 466 901 px => ~ 42 MP
Answers to my previous questions:
1) I didn't get dark corners. So the image circle of the DA*11-18 is large enough to work properly with applying composition adjustment - really nice! DA*11-18 delivers at least at 18mm!
2) Depending on the subject the sizes of the expanded sensor area show that it may be beneficial to use composition adjustment. If we crop a standard K-1 image to 4:3 ratio we get 6549 x 4912 px = 32 168 688 px => 32 MP.
