Missing lenses...

I am trying to cover some focal length with a few zoom lenses and would like a few recommendations...

Lenses should be AF Zoom lenses, around F/2.8 (SDM type preferred)

I want to cover somewhere around 20-70mm, 70-200mm and 200-300mm

I know there are some sigma/tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses out there and they basically cover the same range as my DA* 50-135mm.. Are they as good as the DA*?

Lenses I'm currently using are in my signature...

Thoughts?

if you don't trust those brands, the Pentax 80-200 2.8 is about $1500 used no SDM. other choices can be the Tokina AT-X 820 but not SDM either.

I cover the range of 10mm to 400mm with 4 zooms and 2 teleconverters.

Sigma APO 10-20mm F4/5.6 EX DC (77mm filter)
Pentax FA-J 18-35mm F4/5.6 (67mm filter)
Tamron XR Di 28-75 F2.8 (67mm filter)
Sigma APO 70-200 F2.8 EX First version (non DG, non macro version) (77mm filter)
Sigma APO 1.4X and 2X DG teleconverters.

This gives most of the critical range you note at F2.8, and ability to get 300 F4 and 400 F5.6 with the TCs.

Pentax zoom is the origonal kit lens from the *ist and *istD

With the exception of the 10-20mm, all are full frame lenses.

You're looking at some serious expenses!

The 25-70 range can be covered by Sigma or Tamron, or older Pentax models. 70-200 lenses currently on the market cost about 1k, again Tammy or Siggy. Older FA lenses from Pentax will again compare well enough.

All in all, you're looking at something between 1500 and 2000$, for two lenses, to cover about 24-200 at f2,8.

While I won't argue about the cost of the kit I noted above, what you need to think about is how long you will keep a lens. They should outlast the cameras.

Also the sigma HSM lens is lower in price by quite a bit over the origonal. I would be interested to see a side by side image comparison of the 70-200, i.e. the one I own, the origonal DG macro version and the new HSM version.

either my lens will drop in value or go up Who knows.
