I'm holding out for full-on K-cup support. Cappuccino is so 1980s...

I too am interested in film cameras, it's my intention to go backwards one day and grab a MZ-3 or MZ-S and use my FA ltds on it, so aperture rings are cool for me.

Where my head is at with all of this is; no doubt the FA31 is better lens than this new HD FA35, but look at the price difference. And if not going for a FA31 the other choice might be the Sigma 35/1.4 Art, which again is mighty expensive. For the price of one of those lenses you might be able to pick up a new FA35/2 or a new HD FA35/2 along with a FA20 or FA24 second hand (or... I'm hoping that this new HD FA35/2 is the pebble that starts the avalanche and we see some other older discontinued FA lenses being HD coated and back on the shelves for sale, which would suit me just fine!).

What I'm really concerned about is how well f2 performs on all of the above mentioned. I know what shooting f1.4 is like, and it's tricky to nail that focus, even with AF I think the Art will have some hit and misses under the Pentax AF system. I think (like the DFA 50/1.4) that all the real magic of the Sigma 35/1.4 happens from wide open to around f2, after that I think the 'wow' factor loses some appeal and other lenses can start to keep up a little.
I've seen videos of the FA43 vs the DFA50 for example, and the DFA50 is obviously the better lens, in every way, but once it gets to around f2-4 I don't feel the difference is always night and day. For sure you need the DFA50 for those product photo shots, where imperfections are completely gone, but for general shooting, even paid events like weddings and such, I don't think the public will give that much of a hoot over 10-15% loss in IQ etc.

I truly want a FA31, but my god it's an expensive piece of glass, and here we have this new offering which although not quite as wide is not far from it's focal length, I do see it as being a competitor to the FA31. The real question is how much better this HD FA35 is to it's predecessor and how well it can battle the FA31.

Exciting times!

EDIT: Just had a chat with Pentax Australia and they will be updating their website shortly for the HD FA 35/2 and DA* 11-18. Prices are $495AUD and $1925AUD respectively. Stock expected in around 10 days.

I'll post links to the lenses once he's updated the site, he's gonna notify me when he's done.

EDIT EDIT:

For ten years now the FA 35/2 was my favourite, especially after I got the K-1, for colour rendition, bokeh handling wide open(!), minimal chroma aberrations... and yes, I am sorely tempted. Wished though Ricoh did it's homework fully and come at least with a quick manual focus implementation, it's entirely possible with screwdrive focus motors, proof is DFA 105/2.8. Anyways, the trend is promising, if they are onto resurrecting other film era designs, may I suggest FA 20-35/4! Who said FF must come with bulk and weight, the light and compact yet good optics are badly needed on both wide angle and tele spectrum!
Got any shots to share with yer old FA35?

Did I miss something? Is this a rumor?

At least when I used to have the DA15, IIRC it has quick shift/DMF built in.

I was referring to the "DFA 105/2.8" mentioned in the other comment. As for quick shift, the implementations I have used are a far cry from manual focus on the fly.

Quick Shift is only good, in my opinion, when using back button AF. I really don't care for using that function on my K-5 II (probably the one ergonomic complaint I have about that camera). I would rather reach for the AF/MF lever and retract the drive than try to find the back button every shot.

still has 6 blades the only 'drawback' of the fa-35...…
reckon it depends on which coatings you think render a better image and if you want a virgin versus something that's been around the block.....

Six blades is not ideal... However for the price, I can live with the compromise... I think the HD coating will improve an already good lens. I will sure share my thoughts!

I still yearn for a FA31, I know if I have this HD FA35 it would just leave me still wanting I bet... best to just skip this and save for the 31

I had the old SMC FA35. It was a good lens, but I sold it when I managed to snag an MIJ FA31 with a fair amount of use for 600 bucks from someone who doesn't fully understand what he was getting rid of...

Now I do miss the FA35 from time to time, but neither it or the new one really tempted me like the FA31 used to be.

It will be interesting to see what will come out after this HD FA 35, I have SMC FA 35 and FA 31. When you stop down both of lenses difference is not 'that' big. 6 blades vs 6 is obvious. HD coatings on FA 31 would be interesting. and on all FA limiteds.

I find this true for a lot of lenses. The DFA50 vs FA43 for example, the DFA wipes the floor with the FA43 at all the open wide shots, but things get a little more even when stopped down. Of course the DFA50 is the clear winner in every regards, but the race is tighter for sure when stopped down.

I would very much like to see some sample shots of the FA35 and FA31 at their widest apertures, just to see how different 31/1.8 vs 35/2 can be (as those would be the apertures I would more often than not use). Feel free to entertain me anytime!

I was crushed when I broke my FA 35 falling on ice because I couldn't find anyone who wanted to repair it for a price I was willing to pay. Pentax announcing this lens was beyond anything I hoped for. I don't have it on preorder because I'm focusing on improving my birds photos right now but I will happily buy this lens some day.
