Soligor 450mm F8 - Moon Shot

Last night, I had (for the first time in awhile) a somewhat clear sky. It was still ice-crystal hazy overhead, but I managed to get a few of the gibbous moon (such as attached). After dehazing in LR, I was pretty pleased with the outcome. This was taken with a Soligor 450mm, which I got a few months ago. Before I read the warning about dropping out the iris by accident...I dropped out the iris, by accident. So, it's essentially an open tube. Still, I got the lens for about $20 (with shipping), so I think it's well worth the price.

Nice one. What were your settings?

If you took a pile of them you may want to play a bit with stacking them and see what you can then bring out using RegiStax wavelet editing.
At $20 almost any lens is worth playing around with. This reminds me that I should bust out that cheap teleastanar 400mm f/6.3 I picked up for $25 at a pawn shop a couple years ago and shoot the moon with it as I have mostly ignored it. My technique and ability in shooting the moon has improved substantially in the time so it might be fun to use.

Mossy, I think they were 450mm; F8; ISO 800; 1/125th.

I figured you knew the first two, but it's old habit.

You could bring the ISO down to 200 or 400 and up the shutter speed to 1/200 (something close to this) or 1/400 (something close to this) and get some improvement in image quality. With how the skies are around me where the air is fairly clean and when the clouds have gone away there is very little humidity I would probably shorten up the shutter speed another stop and go with f/8, ISO 200, and 1/400s off of a tripod or f/8, ISO 400 and 1/800s handheld. You will get a better dynamic range and not blow the highlights
