Size comparizon between DA* 16-50 and DA* 11-18.

Nontechnical side by side look. 16-50 on K5, 11-18 on KP.

It's certainly not as big as I think it was made out to be,That's a good size. IMHO.

Thanks for the comparison pic.

You are welcome. It fits in my hand well and feels very good on a KP with the battery grip.
Here is one with the K1 and 24-70 between the two.

How does that compare to the DA 12-24? I've never seen that lens in the flesh, but it is the most relevant comparison.

So far the DA* 11-18 is looking to be another very nice lens, maintaining Ricoh/Pentax's excellent recent record. I am looking forward to seeing how it performs.

I got the lens yesterday and my first test pics show outstanding sharpness edge to edge at all focal length. Lens is already very sharp edge to edge at f/2.8, f/8 is the sweet spot. It is better than sigma 18-35mm: equally sharp at f/8, sharper wide open, less CA, no field curvature detected, no focus problem detected so far... (just tested LiveView). It's in another league than 12-24 that I own too.

Now I desire even more a 16-50 or 18-35 mark II with such IQ.

I just picked mine up. I'm delighted at how relatively compact it is.

Some critical comparisons with my DFA15-30 will be made in the near future.

Well the 16-50 II looks like it just got added to the roadmap. We already knew about the patent.

I hope so, but the lens on the roadmap is red (DA, not DA*) and the patent is just for a tiny tweak to the optical formula to reduce CA. The 16-50 need a redesign from the ground up to match 11-18. But, I guess a 18-35 is more likely to match optical quality of 11-18 than a 16-50.

Yes, as far as focal length goes. Image quality from the DA 12-24 does not compare.

Tiny tweak? No major overhaul, Front end is completely different

The 12-24 is not that much smaller.
DA* 16-50 +K5 on the left, DA12-24 and K7 in the middle and DA*11-18 on KP on the right.

While we're at it, here's a comparison with the DFA15-30. And don't forget the one on the right needs a bigger camera too.

Handy lens size comparison. In-hand, the extra heft of the 11-18 vs the 12-24 (700g vs 430g) is probably more noticeable than the physical dimensions.

Picture reminds me: what a pity the metering mode switch on the camera top plate went away with the K-3 onwards.

And giant 150mm filters as it won't take standard screw-ins.
