On "bokeh", overcorrections, circles of confusion etc.

I do think in oder to discuss lens attributes properly it is important to understand why things are the way they are and what to call it.

I found two very good ressources with nice sample images here:

On Bokeh

and here

About Bokeh

The upper page also features a number of good further reading links/references at its end.

Thanks! The technical explanations for the first link are quite good. While I am generally not a fan of discussions that are heavy on the appearance of OOF specular highlights, it is true that they provide clues as to why bokeh in general may or may not be pleasant. I had to grin a little, however, when I saw the examples from the Sigma 50/1.4 showing concentric rings. The greater horror in my mind is the prominent LoCA which effects image contrast and degrades edge sharpness and, of course, spawns purple fringing.

In the second linked article, I appreciated the explanation of why specular highlight analysis is useful. The discussion regarding correction and how it can ruin bokeh was a revelation.
