Can't Pentax make a good cheap zoom?

A "lens for the way people take pictures" zoom with excellent centre sharpness (for those of us who don't put our subjects on the edges) through out it's entire range. Much maligned by the "edge to edge" purists, but altogether an amazing lens.

If someone knows of another lens that goes from wide angle to mid telephoto with that kind of range, as in you can count on for excellent sharpness at 5.6 at every focal length, I'd be interested in hearing what it might be. It's a property unmatched in any zoom of it's type.

You won't find another 7:1 or greater lens like it.
