Pentax 12-24 issue at 12mm

Having issues with Pentax 12-24 at 12mm, dark long erratic artifacts in corners, only at 12mm maybe some at 13mm. Any ideas what is causing this?

Could be a misaligned hood, or do you have composition adjustment on by any chance?

Are you using any filter on this lens?

Take the same shot without the hood to rule out the hood.

Picture taken with a Pentax K3 + DA12-24 mm f/4 with a CPL : no vignetting.

No vignetting even with a thick CPL @ 12 mm.

I'll bet you a nickel it's the hood not on properly.

Hood. Give it one more firm twist and you'll hear it click. I've done this lots.
I could never see the point in using the hood on that lens ...

Is it possible to accidentally mount the hood rotated 90 degrees out of position? That would certainly vignette the sides.

It should look like this.

Lens hoods serve several useful purposes

Like Brook Meyer, I am an advocate for using lens hoods. Had a fall while hiking a slippery, rocky stream bed along the Little Grand Canyon Trail in the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. Scraped the lens hood but no damage to 12-24 lens. Another fall in Australia with a 60-250, again no damage other than a broken lens hood (at the circular polarizer cut-out). Lens hoods also help keep the front lens element from getting dirty or obscured by rain drops and can reduce or eliminate flare in some circumstances.

Plus the image contrast is better.
I could never see much of a difference at 12mm.

As for the OP, to me it does not look like a misalignment of the lens hood - if it is the original hood. At 12mm, f10 and infinity focus misalignment on mine looks more like this.

Apologies for a bad shot of my wall, but it is night at the moment over here ...

Yep...it is just a few degrees short of being clicked in. I have done this before and sometimes one can even see the hood edge in the viewfinder.
