SMC Pentax-m 35-70mm 2.8-3.5 Focus/ aperture mark do not line up.

I've discovered that the focus mark (red line) and the aperture mark (diamond shape) are not line up on my copy of this lens. The lens doesn't look tampered with and operates very smoothly. The selected aperture is at the first leg of the first m in mm in stead of at the red diamond shape. Pictures i see online do have this properly lined up. Could this be a manufacturing error?

It should look like this:

I suggest someone has had that lens apart and has put the aperture ring back on misaligned.

The aperture ring isn't the part that is misaligned. It is the lens barrel itself, the fixed non zooming part.

When you mount the lens on the camera and look directly down on it, are the focal length indicators not in the 12 o'clock position ?

Only the one on the zoom ring, not the diamond shape on the barrel above the aperture ring.

Yeah the barrel is off about 1/2 inch compared to my copy.

Does infinity focus correctly or is it short or go past infinity. I don't know that lens particularly but on some lenses barrel parts are positioned with set screws. If infinity is off, the the entire front and focus were reassembled incorrectly. If infinity is good maybe just that barrel part with the red line is mispositioned. Either way it's hard to fix unless you know how to disassemble...zoom lenses are complicated to work on.

loosen the 3 screws in the knurled part, and then you can re position the barrel, or shift it up to see some internals.
