A400f5.6 vs M400f5.6

I'm interested in hearing only from those who have used both.
These two lenses have different optical formulas, but otherwise look like they would handle exactly the same.
Aside from the dramatically reduced close-focus performance of the A version, what do you think of performance differences?

I used to own the M version but when I found a copy of the A series I let the M go. I don't have any comparison photos but my overall impression was that the A is notably sharper. In terms of size, weight and functional use there's not a lot in it, but the closer focus of the A does make it more usable for some subjects.
