New HD Fisheye 10-17mm Sample Pictures

Hi all,

Here's a link to Ricoh's website showing off the new HD Fisheye and sample photos:
HD PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE10-17mmF3.5-4.5ED?Lenses?RICOH IMAGING CANADA

This link is to the Japanese Ricoh website where there are pictures showing the lens mounted on a KP and K-1ii:

Nice to see 'new' lenses - I can't wait to see an updated roadmap!

This is a pleasent surprise to me. As much as I'd love the new 11-18, it's a bit more than I'm ready to spend. This with updated coatings and the removable hood is very tempting.

So adding a green stripe to the body did not fix the purple/blue/any-other-colour fringing ....

Nice. I've always enjoyed my DA 11-17, on both my crop sensor bodies and my K-1. It's a fun lens. But cleaning up the CA has always been a chore (though recent advances in PP has helped a lot). Nice to see the lens with a new coating. Unfortunately it'll impact the future resale value of my current DA but that'll be my kid's problem someday

Its Great news for me. I was looking for a fish eye that wouldn't break the bank.

This Ricoh link does explain the lens philosophy. The examples do show reduced fringing and ghosting with the new HD version.
I love my DA 10-17, and I've been able to clean up the purple fringing quite easily in LR, but if I were in the market now, I would certainly get the new HD version

You need a gold stripe to do that.

I always felt the SMC 10-17 FE lens was a bit of a strange hybrid lens in terms of design. The ribbed grip resembled a standard DA lens. But some other parts were smooth metal, painted over black, more like a DA Limited.

I had a chance to try the new one on a KP today. It definitely feels more like a normal DA now. Most parts are covered in the same textured black coating as lenses like the DA18-135 are. I guess this will be more resistant to scratches. The grip pattern is also updated with the current pattern. The removable hood is now made out of the same plastic that the other DA hoods are, rather than the metal finish of the built-in hood on the SMC version.

Otherwise, there are no surprises. It’s is still remarkably small. Focusing is achieved in less than a second with a quick “zip” sound. I honestly don’t understand the fussing about using screwdrive AF for this lens. Every Pentax body has a motor in it for this purpose, so it makes sense to have some compact lenses that take advantage of that.

I only had a quick look at the image quality. I didn’t see any purple fringing, but I didn’t have much time and didn’t check whether in-camera correction was on or off. I think that is going to be the key to whether this new version is worth upgrading to, but we’ll have to wait for a more controlled test.
