Beach family vacation - use camera or not

Fellow Pentaxians

I am heading to a nearby beach with family, wondering if I should use my camera at the beach. Will be taking mostly family portraits.

I have ks2 and two weather sealed lenses - the kit lens and 16-85. Other lenses in my kit - 43, 77, 50 1.8, 35 2.4

How bad is beach for the camera - can I get away as long as I use the weather sealed lenses. I am assuming non weather sealed are a complete no. I am thinking of using the kit lens to minimize the regret.

I take my camera to the beach whenever I go. As long as you keep it out of the sand and water you'll be fine. Just use sensible precautions.

I had mine on the beach several times a couple of weeks ago. I stuck to my WR lenses as a precaution primarily due to wind-driven sea spray. I also wiped it down each day.

People have been taking non-weather sealed lenses and cameras to the beach for what? 70 years? I don't understand your concern to be honest. I will say I avoid the beach if there is high wind that is blowing the sand but otherwise its no different than any other place. Make sure you have a good camera bag to keep things in when not being used. Otherwise, have fun.

I've been to a beach more in the last year than ever and taken a camera each time. I seldom change lenses there, but I don't think there's much that's going to harm it if you are sensible. Beside, there are all kinds of photo oportunities at the beach.

Thanks a lot. Seems like I was paranoid, although I do remember reading on this and other forums about perils of taking the camera to beach. But it seems like my concerns were misplaced.

Take the Kit lens and be done with it. The Kit lens is more capable than people give it credit.

Took my kp with 55-300 plm with no concerns. I have a weather proof usagear carry bag. Kept all sand out between shots. Maybe have a UV filter for added lens protection. Remember to take the sun cream.

On the beach, or in heavy rain, is about the only time I keep the UV filter on - otherwise I treat it as a transparent screw-in lens cap. Admittedly, i only use cheap, second-hand ones, since they are seldom used for their intended purpose.

Yeah... one of benefits to choosing Pentax is the durability. Just bring something Weather sealed/WR and you should be able to shoot without incident... even in terms of sand. I've been in the water taking pictures, tripped and fell... K-3 just keeps on trucking. The biggest fear, is how to go in the water, and leave your camera behind securely.

Stop stressing so much and just enjoy the fact you chose Pentax with WR

Just try not to change lenses. I swear, wind or no wind I get stuff on my sensor if I change lenses at the beach.

Most beaches are fine, some may have rogue waves which you need to watch out for so keep your stuff at a safe distance. If it’s a remote area take a plastic bag in case of rain...

There is no use buying a camera like Pentax if you are afraid to take it out in all weather. As mentioned above, you will miss out on many great pictures if you baby your camera too much!
