Is the 50-135 really that good?

In looking for a mid-telephoto I see that photozone has the DA 50-135 rated higher in MTF @ 90mm than many well-regarded primes such as the the Tamron 90 f/2.8 macro.

I am surprised to see a zoom beat a prime with the Tamron's reputation. Brand loyalty aside, is it really that good?

Worth every penny. I was surprised by the IQ when I received mine...I now know why everyone has been talking soooo highly of this lens. Fast, quiet focusing & weather seals. It deserves the DA* gold label.

I am not really sure why we need another thread on this wonderful lens when in fact we have two current related threads alone displayed on the recent lens threads page, no posts within either to me suggest anything but confirmation of your question... have a read for yourself

None the less I am sure you will still get some decent photos reposted to show you why.

MTF is meaningless without a reference point. MTF readings on various lens testing do not have the same standard reference point since variables of the testing conditions are not controlled on the same level.

To be fair, the Tamron SP 90 F2.8 does a much better job with macros.

Gee, does it focus closer than 1 meter?

Mine just came in and though I haven't had much time to shoot with it, my initial impressions are that this lens is THAT good. And for the price with MS Cashback, its worth every bit.

It is so good it will make the IQ of your other zooms seem less than adequate. What a lens!

Yes, it really is that good. This is the one lens I miss the most now that I shoot for the dark side . It's very comparable to the Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS (said to be Canon's sharpest zoom lens)...

For the meager price of $700, you're more or less getting 50mm, 70mm, 85mm, 100mm, and 135mm (and everything in between) prime lenses (speed and compactness aside)

Hey, this is my 1000th post. Mazel Tov to me
