Finding the limits of my Kit 18-55DA

A little over a year ago I replaced my venerable K1000 with a K10D with a kit 18-55DA lens. I loved my old K1000 but am finding the flexibility of digital to be liberating. A year down the track I am looking to upgrade my kit lense with something faster in the same general zoom range. It's been a difficult task as I have struggled to find a f2.8 lens in that range.

Any suggestions? My main photographic interest is people in a creative portrait format. My interest in a faster lens is that I often photograph in low light and do not normally have control over the available light.

The one on the right:

Or this one: AF17-50mm F/2.8 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF); Tamron USA, Inc.

Sigma works well too.

Pentax DA*16-50 f2.8. Members on this forum that have a good copy, love this lens.

The DA*16-50 is not only in that range, it has the speed you need, weather-sealing, and an important 2mm on the wide end. I saved tons of money by instead getting the DA16-45 which is only one stop slower and is an excellent performer.

Thanks for the suggestions

Many thanks, I will check out the recommended lenses. I will likely need to resort to an online purchase as K mount lenes can be hard to find here in New Zealand. Any sites you would recommend?

Most of my shots taken are in the range of the 16-50 and I have the DA 16-50 and a good copy. It is by far my most loved and used lens and hardly comes off my camera.

As for zooms only the da 50-135 beats it IQ wise... just

Like the above the da 16-50 is like having a few primes in that range... its just that good.

B&H and Adorama are probably the places you want to check. they're out of NYC, but the prices may still be better after shipping and taxes. and Pentax has a 1 year world wide warranty
