Pentax 150-450/KP compare Fuji 100-400/X-T30

The auto-focus section was of considerable interest.

Well, the 150-450 is a superb lens. It should be for what it costs...

Better quality Pentax lens, surprisingly sloppy Fuji build.
Pentax KP far better for birding than Fuji mirrorless.
Quite comparable autofocus efficiency on both bodies for larger subjects. Nod goes to Pentax for smaller ones.

Not the autofocus results I had expected based on comments from some mirrorless users.

The Fuji 100-400 is pretty much identically priced to the Pentax lens I believe.

Matched to the two camera's it's basically a wash price-wise. The KP auto-focus matching and sometimes outperforming the Fuji was as much of a surprise as the difference in build quality.

But yes, the Fuji lens by itself can be a couple hundred less. Still with Fuji's community rep for great lens quality the 100-400 should have surprised you.

There is one guy in my photo meetup who has a Fuji (He's primarily a Nikon guy, almost everyone else has a Canon). He played with it a bit when he first got it, but now it stays in the bag. He preferred his Nikon 1...He didn't like the battery life with the Fuji...

Pentax has great quality lenses too, SDM aside...The 150-450 would be rated a * lens if it wasn't variable aperture.

I would have. As soon as I saw the video link, I figured Pentax would win. The dude has a pro-Pentax bias.

Seriously, though, he's not wrong about anything he said. He is kind of obnoxious and repetitive while saying it, though.

Wow... that’s harsh for Fuji...

And I do want that 150-450...

Still, those were birds in flight... not nearly as much of a challenge for the autofocus as a person on a bicycle

I swear while I was watching the seagull-in-flight test I was thinking, "put that seagull on a bicycle and we'll see how good the Pentax AF is".

If Pentax did commercials this is how they would look.

The foot part is the shortest explanation why I'm a Pentax user. There isn't another camera manufacturer who offers well thought out designs and ergonomics at no extra cost.

The impression that Fuji has great lenses has to come from somewhere, but it certainly does not come from actual testing... Just look a a reliable website like OpticalLimits (formerly Photozone) and you'll see how Fuji lenses compromise on all kinds of optical aberrations, as well as corner sharpness. From an optical designer standpoint (which I am) these lenses are designed similarly to fixed lenses compact superzooms of yore, with heavy-handed corrections required to bring out any kind of acceptable results.

Sony appears to be the same, honestly. It makes me appreciate Pentax lens design even more.
