What lens on what camera ?

Hi All and thanks in advance

I have 2 cameras a K100D super and a K5 11
Going on a short holiday
Lenses choices are primes 15 ltd,21 ltd,31 ltd,40 ltd,FA50,70 ltd,Tan .
90 macro and F135 , DA300

.....zooms.DA.10 - 17 fish, DA16 - 45.DA12 - 24, F 37 - 105, Tam 28 - 75, Sig 70 - 200 mac 11.

The dilema is which lenses would you use on which camera ?

Going to the Flinders Ranges so a bit of everything really.

Dave

I think it depends on what you take pictures of but I would take the K5ii with the 10-17, the 28-75 and maybe the da300 or the 70-200

I'd use the K100D with the wider lenses as you're likely to be "filling the viewfinder" with subject matter so the lower resolution sensor won't be at much disadvantage. Also, some prefer the colour rendition of the 6Mp sensor.

Conversely, if you're anticipating cropping from a telephoto image, the K5 II will give you more pixels to choose from. The K5 II will also give you better noise performance at high ISO settings.

So, horses for courses, bearing in mind this is from someone who regularly uses 6Mp *ist's and a K-5

The K-5 has the better high-ISO image quality, better AF, faster frames-per-second, and more pixels so anything involving dim lighting, high dynamic range, fast shutter speeds, highly detailed scenes, and moving things probably will be done with the K-5. Thus, the K-5 will be the workhorse camera.

Personally, I'd keep one of the wide-angle zooms (probably the DA 16-45) on the K100D for all the casual, street, and vacation snapshots photography. Or maybe the DA10-17 could go on the K100 for fun fishiness.

The K-5 would take everything else.

Have fun!

Have you spent much time in the Flinders? What are your plans?

I'd pack all your primes except maybe the FA50, and the 10-17 and 12-24 zooms. What I carried on any given day would depend on the chosen activity.

I hope you're enjoying the 31

Tough one but i will share my thoughts. Keep in mind that I am a "prime lens" guy.

I would take the K-5ii with the FA31mm as my default lens, with the DA15mm and DA70mm as 'special' focal lengths. This will give a relatively light weight system (body + lens) with outstanding IQ IMHO. The best IQ for the lightest weight!

If you need longer, possibly the Sig 70 - 200 in the bag (but it is heavy).

My 5 cents... hoping that it may help.

Hi All
Just home from work
Thanks for the replies and they all do help

Looking through my photo library the 16 - 45 does well on the K100D ( and the primes ofcourse )
I'll take everything because we are car sightseeing and its a camera club outing. So no need for speed ( non photographers )
Sandy I am enjoying the 31,nothing 'special' yet a photographer I am not.
Weight is not a worry but the forecast mmmm, waited a year and the weather has other ideas

I'd stick to easy solutions. Like:
  • K-5 II for primes
  • K100D Super for zooms
Or all focal lengths above 70mm on the K-5 II (faster and more precise AF).

Hi Dan

The trip was good ,the weather was ok and yes I chopped and changed lenses alot ( the what if i use this one now ).
The K5 did most of the work and I mainly used the primes.
I don't have an online photo site, but looks like I should use one

I would take:

DA 16-45 as the general purpose lens. It is also close enough to the DA 15 Limited to leave that lens at home.
Then take some primes for low light and when you want to take a higher quality picture: DA 21, FA 31 Limited, FA 50 and DA 70mm. In trips I rarely ever need anything longer than 70mm. And if you only want 3 primes, I'd leave the FA 50 behind and just take the 21, 31 and 70.

This would be a nice compact set that would fit in a small bag - oh and I'd take just the K-5 II. It's a higher end reliable body and I'd have no problem traveling with it alone.

DA 15, FA 31, and DA 16-45 would probably do it for me. K-5 all the way as well.

p.s. selling a few of those lenses and getting a Pentax 16-85 or 18-135 would be my suggestion although I know that wasn't the intended purpose for this thread.

Hi Pres

I used all of the above ..and more
Do you sell lenses....a foreign concept for me.......the one with the most wins.......no?....
When the coffers re-build maybe another zoom lens....but the 77 is...well......

I'm currently trying to sell lenses, actually, maybe 1/4th or so of my collection of 20ish lenses should go away. My thought is that it is better to have less glass around which is of high quality and really fits a need vs. more glass around that maybe isn't so useful or very good.

a bit late, but my take on it, K-5 II with 15, 21, 31, 50, 70.
