Agree. Keeping that stray light at bay makes a difference.

My Pentax M 85mm f2 is just incredibly sharp from f4 onwards.

Here are MTF curves from f5.6 at about 4m or 50 focal lengths.

My favorites are the M-28, M-50, M-135, since these are the only ones I have
Would like to add a 35 and 85 eventually

I notice the OP didn't specify K-mount lenses.

My Schneider-Kreuznach Cinelux Ultra 125mm f/2.0 cinema projector lens (converted to Pentax 645 with a focussing helicoid) is firming as my favourite portraitist. It has no adjustable iris diaphragm, so it's f/2.0 or it's nothing - you can't much more manual than that.

If its the M 28/3.5 and the M 50/1.7, you will struggle to find better. The M 135 is no slouch either. Great set up.

I would like to add my M 20/4 to the list, for a not so obvious reason. When used with a reversal ring, bellows and extension tubes I can get crazy magnification for macro shots. You are looking at the millimeter markings on a plastic ruler here.

That second picture, black and white, has incredible sharpness and bokeh at the same time. That looks like an amazing lens.

This gets into microscope levels of magnification. Gotta get myself one of those setups for the lab... considering I already have both lens and camera

The M 20/4 was just made for this. It has a 49mm filter thread that works perfectly with my Pentax reversal ring. I think it was also available in 52mm, but I'm not sure.

The later A 20/2.8 and FA 20/2.8 has 67mm filter threads. You will need a different reversal ring or bunch of step down rings to make that work, but it should be doable.

Primes wider than 20mm tend not to have filter rings. I don't know how well zooms work when used the wrong way round.

At the risk of going off topic, but replying to your comment, I get good macro results with reversed zooms. Zooming allows you to change the amount of magnification, giving you some flexibility in the size of your subject and how big you want it to appear.
