I am a lazy zoom guy, really like the 150-450 but not willing to trash it on a salty Florida Gulf coast beach. Hence the PLM

- f6.3 v f5.8 at 300mm can make it harder to AF; but if you back off to 260mm the maximum aperture is f5.6
My KP should be able to cope with that.

Is the 18-270 worth it?

If you're afraid of changing lenses.

I used to have its predecessor, the 18-250. Very handy for travel or whenever it's difficult to change lenses.

Sharpness is usually reasonably good on these lenses, particularly in the centre, at the wide end and stopped down. At f8 and in good light, the 18-250 was OK:

On the 18-250, sharpness fell off significantly at the long end (the 18-270 is said to be the same). It also suffered from a lot of focus breathing, so the field of view was wider than you would expect. It had a tendency to nisen bokeh. Lots of purple fringing. Lots of barrel distortion at the wide end, although that was usually fixable in post.

I see you have a nice collection of Limiteds. The images from a superzoom would often be a come-down from them. The difference in microcontrast would be particularly striking. If you could manage a combination of the DA 18-135 and one of the DA 55-300 lenses instead, the results would be less jarring in comparison.

If you do decide to get a superzoom, consider the Sigma 18-300. Extra reach and it seems to be well-regarded.

The 28-105. Great for travel and general use, and really sharp too.

Since I changed over to a K-1 it's been a 70-200. I have the 28-105 but it's a bit short for the type of photography I've been doing recently.

I swear the PLM and KP were developed together.

It depends on what I'm doing. If outdoors, I normally have a DA* 16-50 on my KP. I'll also have my 55-300 PLM with me. Indoors, the PLM is swapped for a DA* 50-135 for its ƒ2.8.

I have to admit it's seldom the objectively best lens for a single certain photo, but it delivers good enough more often than not, and it's the lens that is most suited for most of the photographic opportunities that arise out of thin air in an instant.
Of course I'm talking about the 18-135 like so many in this thread before me already did. If I don't know what exactly to expect, I just put this on my camera and photograph what ever may come my way with it.
