One subtle difference is the 30.5mm filter thread on the DA40's hood. Cheaper filters!

Hm, so I guess there's the lens cap thing as well. Screw-on vs slip-on. One's too hard to take off, the other's too easy.
Another solution is to put the pretty screw-on cap into permanent storage and purchase 30mm snap-on caps. I bought 2 for under $5 through an ebay store.

and the da35 produces beautiful colored contrasty 3d-ish images, but who would want that?

My (and ogl's) fa77 has the worst border performance of all pentax lenses wide open, but it creates lovely images.

If you like the da40 focal length and are not bothered by its minimum focus distance than get it because it is an excellent allround performer, allthough I find it a bit too small for a big k10/k20 body.

The da35 is also a great lens, it all depends on your priorities.
DA35 is very good MACRO lens , but I don't like DA35's bokeh at all.
35 mm lens MUST has good border resolution to be walk-around lens.
DA40 is better.

FA77 has low border resolution wide-opened and it's not bad for portraits,
I shoot landscapes with FA77 at f4.5-6.3 - VERY HIGH BORDER RESOLUTION.

Quick closeup test on DA40:

I shot it specifically for this thread, it's as close as the lens will focus.

I have both lenses. I'm in the opposite corner as ogl. I love the rendering on the DA35. It's my favorite lens so far. I feel the DA40 and the DA35 have a similar look to the images. I got the DA40 for a EDC (everyday carry) setup, but if size/weight were no issue, the DA35 would be the default lens. With the DA40, I miss the close focus ability almost everyday. But at least I always have the DA40 with me.

I don't own either of these lenses, however this wouldn't change the fact that the advantages of the 40mm over the 35mm would be cost and weight of the lens.

Everything else between the lenses would be subjective to the user (i.e. focusing distance, 5mm focal difference, edge sharpness, throw distance, lens cap, OOF rendering, lens hood, etc.).

not sure if this was noted, but some DA35's seem to have problems focusing to infinity. it's been a while, but i have read some complaints / seens some bad samples.
