I'd also suggest the Sigma 28/1.8 EX DG - it's almost as good as the 24....

I find either of them is quite useful in the kitchen...

What's your favourite lens for recording your fine dining experience? In the Instagram Age, I guess my question would be the equivalent of What do you use to 'gram your foodie shots?

For my K-1, I find the 31mm, creamy as the bokeh gets, just doesn't focus close enough. My D FA 50mm F2.8, on the other hand, doesn't give me the perspective I want, without having to leave my chair.

I've had great success (to the point of buying a second copy) with the Komine-made Vivitar 28mm F2 Close Focus (CF). Very highly-rated in the Pentax Lens Database.
Is there a perfect lens for this? in my opinion, one of the more important aspects is that the out of focus areas appear smooth and creamy, rather than nervous and distracting, especially when there are specular highlights such as on greasy food.

Considering the variety of opinions, I would be inclined to say "no"

my guess would be the 35 macro, what do you think?
This also would be my choice on my K-3.

I’ve given the 18-35mm some careful thought. It’s still a possibility before it goes out of stock forever. It’s awfully large of course, with potential AF issues. I trust you manually focused for these appetizing[!] shots? Great bokeh.

this would also be my suggestion:

Thanks for the Sigma tips. I’ll keep my eyes on them on Craigs and at the camera swap meets.

Absolutely not. AF works very well. It is faster and more precise than DA* 55mm...

I use my phone because I normally got to restaurants to eat, not to take pictures. Very sporadically I have used my Sigma 10-20 3.5 with good results.

Truthfully it would be my cell phone. I usually don't have anything else with me when eating out.

If I have pictures of food, it's because we sat down to eat... after taking photos . Normally while traveling, but also a couple times with the family.

I would lean more to using my phone. If I had my camera I would want the 31mm limited for food shots.

My 40 Limited or 50 Macro F 2.8, but they're attached to large, attention getting cameras like my K5 or K1.

One I'm using mostly now, is my 28mm F 2.8 lens on my Ricoh GR ll. This also has a macro mode, which comes in handy, along with the wide angle. It also has a ASP-C sensor..image quality doesn't suffer.

One advantage of the little Ricoh, is that in size and appearance...no one notices or cares much in a restaurant. To many, looks like I'm using a Cell phone. The small , unobtrusive GR runs under the radar and doesn't attract much attention.
