I always take my 400mm f/2.8 with me, it makes for a fantastic lobster mallet. Those little wooden hammers are for limp-wristed sissies.

In all seriousness, if the FA31 doesn't focus close enough: a weak +1 close-up filter might be helpful and due to its low power it shouldn't introduce any unwanted aberrations to the image. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a 7mm extension tube for K mount.

It's not something I do in any serious way, but if I DO do it, it's because I happen to drop into a restaurant while out and about ith a camera, and my out and about lens is normally the 31 Ltd (on K-1),so that's what I use. Usually. And I like the results - but, as I say, I don't do t seriously.

Food photography is always a challenge for me. However, I usually get the best images via a 50mm 1.4, or a 100mm macro 2.8.

I usually try to photograph a portion of the food. I intentionally cut off parts of the plate, to include, maybe a hand, or a cup or something else. So the focal point in my food photography isn't the food itself, but rather the event of food, if that makes sense?

Sigma 70-300 Macro(red ring) on tripod- i forget what the sweetspot is for the f stop for that leans is- its inexpensive and takes one heck of a photo when you get it set up properly

What's your favourite lens for recording your fine dining experience? In the Instagram Age, I guess my question would be the equivalent of What do you use to 'gram your foodie shots?

For my K-1, I find the 31mm, creamy as the bokeh gets, just doesn't focus close enough. My D FA 50mm F2.8, on the other hand, doesn't give me the perspective I want, without having to leave my chair.

I've had great success (to the point of buying a second copy) with the Komine-made Vivitar 28mm F2 Close Focus (CF). Very highly-rated in the Pentax Lens Database.

To be honest, I don't take pictures at all, but my wife is a photographer. We recently had a son, and we don't really go anywhere because of it. I am now generally sitting at home with the baby because my wife is on the road again, and the only thing that I can now photograph is diapers and baby food like hipp formula. I'm waiting for my beloved to come back and then we'll get out again. In the meantime, I am at home with my beloved son, and I take pictures on my phone of him. and how he eats. By the way, sometimes I eat his food myself, I never thought that this stuff is so delicious.

I haven't been to a restaurant in a long time. I gave birth to a baby....

A smartphone has the advantage of always being with you, plus a familiar field of view, close focus and massive depth of field. So there's nothing wrong with that for casual photos of food.

If you're looking for a DSLR lens for food, a normal lens with close focus capability, like the DA 35/2.8 Macro Limited (crop camera) or the DFA 50/2.8 Macro (full frame), works well.

Congratulations on the baby! They do curtail the social life for a while though....

I mostly use Canon compacts (G3X) for these pictures.



For serious close-ups, I use a 645Z + A 120 mm f/4 Macro (cherries and strawberries) or a K3 + A 75 mm f/2.8 on the 645 Auto Bellows (blueberries).
