Testing A New Lens - Seeking a bit of Advice

After a bit of feedback on what new lens to get I have decided on the Pentax DA 16-50 f2.8. While most people seem happy with the lense I'm a bit alarmed by the many comments about bad copies. Is there a hand set of test to check this lens out to make sure it's up to spec?

Others will offer methods to really test the lens with test targets and tripods, right and wrong lighting.

Just go out for a walk with the lens. Take lots of normal shots you would naturally take with it. In the mix add some shots close up, and wide open. Be very specific to what you are focusing on, take a notebook and mark the info down. Then when you get home really scrutinize these shots at 100% on your screen.

I am not saying that anyone more technical is wrong. But you may get your answer a lot faster just going out and shooting.
