Thomas Heaton Pentax lens kit...

So Thomas Heaton shoots a Canon 5D Mark IV with a Canon 16-35 F4, Canon 24-70 F2.8 and a Canon 70-200 F4 for his landscape work and it's a solid kit based on solid choices.

I have been pondering how to put together a K1 Mark II kit with somewhat equivalent lenses.

The only direct swap is the Pentax 24-70 2.8, it's a direct equal (except $700 cheaper!)

For the 16-35 F4, I think the Rokinon 20mm 1.8 is a decent choice. Thomas shot with a Zeiss 20mm for years before getting the 16-35. And 20mm is a great focal length and what you need when you need a wide landscape, so no issues there for me. The 15-30 is massive, doesn't take filters easily and weighs a ton. Great lens but not an f4 equivalent for me.

The 70-200 F4 is the tricky one. I have the 55-300 WR and though it works fine in crop mode, it's weird in FF mode from about 70-170. The 70-200mm 2.8 Pentax is a fine lens, but for mobility it's not an F4 size and weight lens.

So any ideas or thoughts regarding these three, and specifically a 70-200 F4 FF Pentax lens equal? (Currently produced would be a bonus!)

Well, the Pentax SMC Pentax-DA* 60-250mm F4 ED [IF] SDM is probably a good "replacement". Somewhat wider zoom range and very good optical performance (check the reviews, and I have it and like it). And, pretty much OK on full-frame (and modifiable if you are fussy).

Hi Qwntm

Will the 60 - 250 with baffle removed work for you.?
70 - 200 are all older lenses
31 ltd in between your 20 and 43..?
Is the Tamron 70 - 200 2.8 light enough.?

Hmm smc Pentax-F 70-210 zoom is nice and compact, full frame , widely available second hand, cheap and excellent image quality for landscape. Just ignore the styling

Good to see you back on here Ed.

The old F70-200 / F70-210 are quite good. I compared mine directly against the 60-250 and it held up well throughout the zoom range.
It's cheap, light, and copies are available all day long.

For a landscape kit have you considered the KP + DA*11-18 + DA 20-40 + DA 55-300 PLM ?
Fully weather-sealed, tilt screen, pixel-shift and half the size/weight/cost of the FF setup and the 11-18 takes filters.

Caliscouser makes a good point. Pentaxes are excellent field cameras in any case, so good luck with your thoughts.

Not sure why you'd duplicate someone's specific setup, but you can approximate it with the K-1 Mk II, DA12-24 f4 (with the understanding that it works on FF from 17-24mm), the 24-70 f2.8 and the DA*60-250 f4 (even better if the internal baffle is removed).

Obviously the Holy Trinity of f2.8 lenses is for purpose, bigger and makes a bigger dent in your childrens' inheritance.

I guess the point needs to be made:

Thomas Heaton (whoever he is) will take photos that look like Thomas Heaton photos no matter what gear he's using, whether it's Canon, Pentax, Phase One, or an iPhone.

You and I won't take photos that look like Thomas Heaton photos even using exactly the same gear that he does, and we shouldn't be trying to. We should be trying to take photos that look like our own. So just use the lenses that will let you do the things that you want to do, because trying to replicate the stuff that some guy on the internet uses is just a recipe for frustration.

Ricoh reused lens designs to have best in class lenses at minimal R&D, so the K1 kit is good overall but not necessarily the best kit for landscape only photography.
That said, just my little experience with wide angle and filters: the filter thread is only part of the story to adapt filter with no vignetting in corners and fair gradation with ND grad filters. For instance, a 100mm ND grad 2 stop filter on a 20mm lens behave more like a 100mm ND grad 3 stops filter at 35mm, the reason being that the ND gradation is proportional to the side of the filter itself and unrelated to the focal lenght used. In other words, even if it is possible to mount a 100mm filter system on a 16-35 f4 lens (because the 77mm filter thread allows it), the ND gradation won't be as a good match as when that same 100mm filter system is mounted on a 24-70 type of lens.

That, of course , is a bit of a dilemma whenever someone isn't a brand loyalist trying to make up a lens kit from old stuff. I use the D-FA* 70-200 f2.8 because I have it, it is optically great, but I'd rather prefer to trade it for a D-FA 70-200 f4 and a D-FA 85 1.4, none of those two Pentax lenses being available new at the moment.

If you are on a budget and don't want to pay more than 3 grands for a decent mirrorless body, how about getting a D810 with a trio of Nikkor F mount f4 lenses?

I'd say the da 12-24 as noted earlier would be a rational wide angle zoom that isn't super large.

The 24-70 f2.8 is a solid lens, but for landscape work the 28-105 might be a better fit which cuts the weight down.

The 70-200 f4 is harder to replace with current gear, but the f/fa f4-5.6 lenses might be the best fit. Other options include the da 60-250 or even a prime, the DA 200 (This pairs well with the 28-105)

If it were me I'd go with:

DA 12-24 f4
DFA 28-105
F 70-210

I would supplement these with the lenses below whenever this was required:

FA 31 LTD
DA* 55
FA 77 LTD
DFA 100 Macro WR
DA* 60-250
DA* 200
FA* 300

Of course I already own all of these except the 28-105.

I don't get the impression the OP wants to match his style as much as he respects his gear choices and the flexibility the three lens kit is offering.

I'd have to second UncleVanya's suggestion above to consider the DFA 28-105mm in place of the 24-70. I am continually impressed with the sharpness of this lens and from all the reviews I've read I don't think the 24-70 will get you sharper pictures.

I am generally in the same position as you trying to use a 3 lens setup for day hikes up to 10 miles. My wife and I were able to spend our vacation time this year in Colorado and in Acadia NP -- my gear for hikes was the 15-30, 28-105, dfa 70-210 2.8. After adding water, rain gear, food and tripod this made for very long and tiring days and I've realized this setup wont work for me in the future (I'm 58). In the past I've used the zeiss 25mm in place of the 15-30 but I've found this is not always wide enough. I had considered the Rokinon 20 1.8 as you have but reviews of this lens are ok but not stellar (the 15-30 is excellent by the way). Other options might be leitaxing the Nikon zeiss 21mm, using an Irix 15mm if you like going really wide. I haven't researched it yet but there may be a Nikon 20mm that could be leitaxed that would fit this hole. The Tamron 70-210 2.8 is still available and this might work in place of the Pentax. I'm personally hoping Pentax does release the 70-210 f4 as I feel a 15-30, 28-105, 70-210f4 setup would be doable, and for longer hikes swapping the 15-30 with the zeiss 25mm. It's really the 70-210 2.8 that really weighs the pack down. Just my thoughts at the moment …..

How about building a Sony system. The Sony A7RIII would be a little more expensive than the Pentax K1, but you could save money on the new Tamron lenses: 17-28 RXD (or the up coming 20mm f2.8 priced $350), 28-75 RXD and the up coming 70-200 f2.8 for FE mount that'll weight ~ 850gr. That would be a compact kit. Now if you go the DSLR route and Tmaron, you could still get a D810 with the 17-35 f4 Tamron, 24-70 Tamron and 70-210 f4 Tamron.

(*) The DA 12-24 is a crop lens, not great on the K1, heavy vignetting, uncontrolled edge perf at wide). The FA 70-210, well that's a possibility for the compact landscape tele, cheap, light weight, but it's a old lens, not up to the today's standards of the other new lenses you could get from evenTamron or Sigma.
