Sigma 24mm 1.8 opinions?

I suspect I'll need a fast wide angle lense in addition to my the 18-55mm zoom lens I have ordered for my K20D. Which current or reasonably easily available 2nd hand prime lens (that's not ridiculously expensive) would you recommend?

I noticed Sigma makes a 24mm 1.8 lens which isn't hugely expensive, around 350 EUR around here. How do you find it? Would another lens up to that price level be better? I'd prefer something below 30mm.

You've hit Pentax squarely in their soft spot, their Achilles heel. Currently there is a huge gap in the accessible prime lens line-up between 21mm and 35mm. The 21mm is a pancake lens, and hence not fast (f/3.2, if I remember correctly) and the only lens that's roadmapped in that hole is the DA* 30mm, whose aperture is unknown for now, but it's expected to be fast and pricey (given that it's a * lens).

If you can find one in the used market, you can get an FA* 24mm f/2, which sells for $500-650. As for other pricey options, theres the splendid 31mm Ltd, which is north of $800 new, but isn't wide on a digital body. Even less wide, though affordable, is the FA 35mm f/2; a great lens by all accounts.

Your only option is Sigma if what you want is a fast 24mm (or 28mm). Both of these are reputedly very good performers, but are also quite big and bulky.

Why Pentax has FOUR lenses in the 30-35mm range but NONE in the 21-30mm is anybody's guess

Thanks, very valuable information! What's the situation with below 20mm non-fish-eye lenses?

There's a 14mm/2.8 in production, and a 15mm/4 (pancake-esque) coming next year. The pentax bible lists a 20mm/2.8 as having previously existed (along with a 28mm/2.0)

I have this lens and I can say it has produce some great shots for me, at first I was wondering why I would need a lens this wide when I mostly take sports shots. It has got me out of some tricky spots when I need to include a lot information.

I can recommend it.

The Sigma 14 f/2.8 was a good buy for me, I use it on a regular basis. Some say it's too wide...

I second what others have said of this lens. It's very good, fast and sports a handy close focus feature. Only negative is the size: this is definitely not a pancake lens!
