Yes, it is certainly a better lens, but the 18-55 is really not that bad, so I often wonder why the NEED to upgrade..

What is the primary reason that you find your current 18-55 lacking?

Care sharing some images?

I've heard that, 16-45 provide sharper image and colors are more vivid. But again, I don't have other lens to compare..thanks

I have both lenses and I agree with those statements. The extra 2mm at the wide end is important to me as well, as is the low distortion at wide angle. I consider the 16-45mm to be a faster lens, because it's sharper at F4 than the 18-55mm is at F8. I don't hesitate to use the 16-45mm wide open, whereas I felt I always had to stop the 18-55 down a notch or two.

The way I look at it, 18-55mm came free with my camera, so I didn't begrudge buying the 16-45mm as my standard zoom. I've never regretted buying it, it's a great lens especially at current prices.

Why do you "need" to upgrade, and why that focal length? Why not a 17-70, or 18-250, for instance? Just wondering.

maybe if you're telling us what you're looking for in your upgrade?

some negatives about the lens.
it is the longest at the wide end and will cast a shadow in photos when using the pop-up flash
and it is a tad "short" at only 45mm
there are also some technical difficencies noted in the Welcome to Photozone! review but it still is a good lens based upon most user reports

Hi Maryo,

Looked at your flickr page and your image colors are quite vivid ;-)

Your car series is nice.

I think you should consider a lens which offers really new perspectives. The advantage of the 16-45 is that it is wider, but eg a 55-300 offers real new opportunities. Another option is eg the FA50/1.4, which allows nice blurry backgrounds and low light photography.

If you really think your images need more sharpness and punch then the 16-45 is still a good option.
