Wonderful recap, I now own the FA 31mm and the FA 77mm im 2/3 the way to the fabled FA limited trio. This reminds me of this article which was a summary of a Japanese article that was translated about Jun Hirakawa. Lessons from a Legendary Lens Designer | Photoblog | The Northcoast Photographer

"The Limited Lenses are being developed with the ideal of high quality rendering in mind. They represent a break from preconceived notions concerning the importance of numerical evaluations in lens design. Instead, we wanted to make a lens that would produce beautifully rendered, unforgettable images. "

The FA limited are one of the last of the types of lens that create images that do this. The DFA 50 is close but it trades sharpness for lightness.

Thanks for posting in so much detail!

I do think that small size is a major benefit of these lenses as due to their small size they tend to be always in my bag. The much larger / heavier (not to mention expensive) modern lens designs out perform the limiteds (clinical measurement wise that is) but the FA limiteds still have a really nice character and are great to handle.

I hear such a lot about the Three Amigos - does anyone find that they miss the Quick Shift Focus feature that came along later? (Genuine question.)

I seldom use my FA 77/1.8 as an auto-focus lens.

The FA 77 has some kind special mechanism in the design that engages around f2.4 to allow better close focus performance when stopped down. Ikenaga-san mentioned you can feel a little click there if you use the aperture ring, but I can’t detect it on mine. In any case he strongly recommends stopping down to f2.5 for the best close focus performance with that lens.
You can feel it in the aperture ring, or in the focus ring?

I don't think I have ever had the 77 miss focus on my KP. At least not noticeably. I need to mount her on my K-1 and run around with it mounted to get the most out of it.

Likewise. (Same with the FA31 & FA43)

One can hear it when moving the aperture ring between the f/2.0 and f/2.8 click stops.

this thread is not helping me

I've got the SMC DA limiteds

and just added the FA 43mm Limited because of the images posted here:

PentaxForums.com → Pentax Lenses and Accessories → Lens Clubs → the Pentax 40mm and 43mm Lens Club

Read more at: the Pentax 40mm and 43mm Lens Club - Page 8 - PentaxForums.com

and now this thread has me thinking about the other FA limiteds

you folks are not helpful

The 77 is even better than the 43, which is already a lens full of character.
