Still confused @csa is the ask a lens that is a shorter focal length or otherwise one that requires you to be closer to the subject or one that is a longer focal length and allows you to be farther from the subject for similar magnification.

A Raynox macro filter will increase the macro multiplication of your current lens. The DCR-150 and the DCR-250 each cost about $70 from Amazon. The 250 is an 8 diopter magnification while the 150 is a 4.8 diopter. Each comes with a spring clamp allowing use with any diameter lens from 52mm to 67mm. Also the two filters can be stacked for a 10.8 diopter.

The OP talks of having to crop the photos so I'm guessing more magnification is what is desired. The thing with macro generally the closer the lens the more magnification. Shorter focal lengths let you get closer to the subject. A TC should give you more magnification without having to move the lens closer but with a loss of f-stop and IQ.

It looks like you have a pentax Q. Have you tried using it with an adapter? It will get you closer for sure

All my macro is done outside. My Q is worthless as being unable to see the LCD outside.

I would suggest the DA 35 macro then.

I think first I'd try reversing a 50mm f1.7 or something like that onto your Sigma.
You'll get 2:1 with that, and the filter ring adapters are cheap.

I'd probably also recommend a reversing ring just for reversed lenses. Also cheap and potentially just the trick.

There's a lot of inexpensive fiddling I would suggest before you drop big money on something, just to get an idea of what you're really after.

I've had good results reversing my PENTAX-M SMC 50mm f1.4 on my Auto Bellows.
