Do I have the rare Takumar 50 1.4?

I picked up a lot of old Pentax gear on craigslist the other day. Among the lot was this Takumar 50 1.4. Am I right in thinking this is the rarer version, with the protruding rear element and A and M setting?

Looks like the infrared mark is in the wrong position. Should be to the right of the 4.

Looks like the 7 element one. The 8-element has a bulging rear element, and the IR mark is inside the 4.

7-element. In addition to the other identifiers the serial # is too high.

I purchased a seven-element lens {right} .... later I was able to purchase an eight element lens {left}.

Your lens is confusing because it appears to be a combination of the two.

8-Element (#1576330)
' to right of 8 and 4 on aperture ring
2 between 2.8 and 1.4 on aperture ring
M-A switch
glass slicks out slightly from rim

7-Element (#3430365)
' between 8 on 4 on aperture ring
dot between 2.8 and 1.4 on aperture ring
Man-Auto switch
glass is slightly recessed from rim

You have no photo of the back of your lens, so I can judge only the first three points.
Yours looks like my eight-element lens in the second and third points, but looks like the seven-element in the first point.
Like the others, because of that crucial {IR} red mark on the aperture ring, I would guess that is actually the seven-element version

To be sure, take it off the adapter, and examine the rear element.
With a flashlight {or use your finger} examine the rear element.
If it is the seven-element version, that rear element should be slightly "lower" than the rim is - you should feel the boundary as you go from glass to rim with your fingernail.
If it is the eight-element version, that rear element should be slightly "higher" than the rim is - you should feel the boundary as you go from rim to glass with your fingernail

added: Do not denigrate the seven-element lens though; I doubt if I could tell just by looking whether the seven-element or the eight-element lens was used to take a particular image.

there is a difference in weight, that should be definitive (sorry, I don't remember the numbers)

No. The infra red mark should be on the other side of the 4. The serial number is also too high. But there is nothing wrong with the 7-element version as far as getting quality shots goes and this one seems to be in nice condition. The rear element test has to be done with the lens focused at infinity.

My seven-element lens weighs 236 grams and my eight-element lens weighs 246 grams, but you should be aware that there were several of seven-element variants.

All the details are in the database.

Notice the seven element version went through several design iterations.

According to the database the 8 element one should be 245g, so it makes sense:

My 8-element does not have the 358 stamp but all other marks are as indicated. Serial number begins with 135.

very odd I thought that all of them had that code number stamped?
your switch has a red A and white M next to it?
some more info:
1 : 1.4 / 50 (358) 8 element - Takumar Field Guide
although perhaps there were variations to the original design, can someone else with more knowledge about it add some extra informations please.

this one has no 358 stamped on it, so you might be right,

My 8-ele 50mm f/1.4 does not have anything stamped on the a/m switch either, the other characteristics, weight & position of i-r index etc. are as quoted. My serial number starts 137....

By the way, the rarity of the eight element is hard to establish. They are said to be rare, but in reality they are not that rare. There are fewer of them round, but Asahi Optical Company still made 130 000 of them before they decided that it was not profitable enough. How many good ones are still out there? Your guess is as good as mine.
