If Pentax would be discontinued, would prices go up or down?

A couple years ago, while I was shopping for Pentax, I asked the seller in case Pentax would go bust, if prices would go down. He said that prices would go up because collectors would start buying user Pentax cameras/lenses as collector items and to resell them later at a higher price. Just wondering , if Pentax would go bust, will prices go up or down?. It's an interesting question. If prices go down, it's worth waiting to enjoy buying excellent Pentax products for cheap. If prices go up, than the better strategy is to buy now.

Not very likely.

I think market prices for manual (or af adaptable) lenses would hold steady. I could make an argument that a k1 would appreciate in price, but the fact of the matter is that camera bodies (aside from Leica) are a bit of a "disposable" commodity nowadays, and don't and will not ever appreciate in value.

Perhaps lens prices would go up if stocks get depleted and demand remains steady. For camera bodies, it may be very hard to find some models. For example, the K5IIs is already hard to find, I think users keep them. I saw a K1 for sale at $2200, some people still want a K1 instead of a K1II so that to avoid the accelerator chip, but the K1 is discontinued by Ricoh.

So you're expecting Pentax to go bust very shortly?
I'm just wondering - do you ever think of anything other than doom and gloom?

Not. It's like car insurance. You don't expect to have an accident, yet you buy a car insurance in case it happens. If you have no accident, you spend the insurance money for nothing, but if you have an accident you'r glad the insurance pays for the high costs of repair & al.

Yeah, I bought a K1 II and I still have the K1. Maybe I buy a 100 macro (discounted right now), and an other D-FA28-105 or a K1II + D-FA28-105 kit (the price of kit is 300 euros lower than the price of buying a christams discount K1II and separate D-FA28-105), also planning on buying a couple of extra D-LI90 batteries of 2019 batch (my old D-LI90 batteries may die before cameras).

KPs are cheap at the moment too you could buy one, bang it on fleabay and some idiot would happily pay more for a pre owned than a new camera I see it all the time there is a Fuji with 17 bidders and several days to go. It has already surpassed the price at wex, and they give a warranty. Aren't feeding frenzies fun to watch

Prices would reflect market demand. Right now demand is high, even for the brand's premium offerings...time to sell. (With the one qualifier that FF stuff is not a good format...good values to be found there.)

I'm guessing prices for new stock would initially go down as retailers try to get rid of remaining stock. Then prices would start to climb again.

who knows. There are lenses that were cheap, then became expensive, then cheap again. Other have always been expensive and other always cheap. I feel more modern camera bodies would at least fora while go down in price if people move to other systems. Hopefully we will not know...

Technology tends to depreciate rapidly, and discontinuation limits the appeal for many prospective buyers. But non-retail prices are usually dictated by what the market will bear (buyer's vs seller's market) and there are way too many other factors IMO to accurately predict how the market would behave.

I wonder how much Sigma could charge for brand new 20mm f1.8 EX DG's in k-mount were they to be available today.

They could charge a higher price than the price charged for Canikon mounts, I suppose.
