Kit Lens Hood - Whats the removable Panel for?

Been wondering this for a couple of weeks; the lens hood for my kit lens has this wierd bit where you can slide it out, and create a hole.

Whats it for???

Thanks

It is for rotating a polarizing filter while keeping the hood on.

Though I can easily rotate the polariser without removing that bit, so I don't bother.

Nah, man. It's just like the pit zips on a ski jacket--the lens has got to let off some steam somehow!

On a serious note, I didn't even realize that the little panel slid.

If they were really smart they would hinge it so it could not be lost.

too complex, haha. To make a hinge and pin? Too much work. I'm guessing we are already lucky enough that pentax makes the filter access slots let alone supply lens hoods with the lenses.
