M50/F1.7 vs. DA16-45/F4 Resolution Test

I mainly want to compare the resolution of these two lenses. K20D.

M50/F1.7 @ F6.7, 1/125s, ISO 100, 33% of original size.

100% crops

Note: the 2nd shot in the comparison was taken with an Hoya ND8 filter as well.

My conclusions:
1. The M50 is sharper, as expected, than the zoom lens.
2. The combination of the ND8 filter & F11 shows reduced resolution compared to F6.7.
3. The ND8 may have introduced a slight colour cast.
4. In the last shot, the sun was not partially behind a cloud. I believe the resolution of the 3rd & 4th shots are similar, but the extra lighting makes the 4th appear a bit sharper.

Test seems to generally agree with the photozone measurements (if you assume the M501.7 is the same as the FA501.4, which it isn't but maybe not a bad approximation at f/6.7).

In particular, photozone says that the centre resolution of the zoom at 45mm peaks at f/5.6 and the borders at f/8 so stopping down to f/11 wouldn't be expected to help. My K200D in P mode (which I think is the MTF line, you can't choose), generally picks f/6.7 for my 16-45.

Maybe posting the whole photo from the 16-45 would be interesting as well. I have similarly wondered how shots like this would vary between my 16-45 (at 45) and my FA50 (outside in decent light when big aperture of the prime is not required).

I believe the M f1.7 50mm is one of the sharpest lenses ever produced by Pentax. It is beautifully, sometimes scarily, sharp.

While some might say it's a bit unfair testing 35mm prime against an APS-C zoom that doesn't even make it to the same focal length as the prime, it's a good real-world test, and a great reason as to why Pentaxians should pick an M f1.7.

There's a bit of chromatic abberation in the zoom, as well, but it's very well controlled.

But note how the f1.7 renders in the "control" shot - that tower stands out against the sky, even at infinity focus.

Dosdan, were you walking along the boardwalk? On your way to the Sandstone Graveyard?

According to my photo times, I was at:
  1. The corner of Bowen Tce & Moray St, New Farm - 4:50-4:58 am ( a bit late for a Story Bridge pre-dawn shot - next time I'll get there earlier).
    See: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/40226-storey-bridge-brisbane-bowen-tce-cliffs.html
  2. New Farm Park - 5:10-5:30am - not a good time of the year for rose shots.
  3. Boardwalk - 6:02-6:20am. This shot.
  4. City Botanic Gardens - 6:35-7:10am
