ah,

the SMU is being mentioned in this thread

Depends on its appetite at the time.

'The Pentax DFA 100mm Macro WR is 14 Thin Mints long, 1.43 Thin Mints in diameter, and weighs [???] Thin Mints. The IRIX 150mm Dragonfly is 19 Thin Mints long, 1.9 Thin Mints in diameter, and weighs [???] Thin Mints.'

I don't have any Thin Mints to weigh, so maybe bertwert can provide the missing specs. Then we can answer the question:

"How many Thin Mints are in a Dragonfly?"

we did this standardization, many moons ago....

(:

Well, once again, I don't have an original idea.

Hi. I have a question about those two lenses. Which one would You choose for studio work and why? I need to buy a macro lens for my studio work and I do not have opportunity to test those lenses.

I second the recommendation - but not for sharpness reasons. The Pentax 100 WR easily provides enough resolution for all Pentax sensors when stopped down a little.

The main advantages of the Pentax 100 WR are size/weight, autofocus, work against bright lights (flare/ghost resistance) and easier light setup due to the smaller diameter. Only the last one should be relevant in the studio - unless you need higher magnification than 1:1, where the Pentax provides more and less expensive options. Let me know if you need more detail on this.

The IRIX on the other hand is better corrected for chromatic aberrations - especially along the optical axis. Even stopped down to the diffraction limit, there is distinctively less purple/green coloration in front/behind of the focal plane for critical subjects than with the somewhat dated optical design of the Pentax.

And yes, I do own both - in addition to a few others. They both get used regularly.

Been trying to find the best ~100mm lens for my use case and previously dismissed the dfa100 due to some people warning me (off the record to avoid conflict ) about pf. There was a bit of a storm claiming its a non issue...

I have had some issues with fringing with the 100WR, but the positives are so overwhelming, I tend to ignore the issue...
