If you are thinking of converting the lens to screwdrive, there is lots of useful information in
How To: Convert SDM to ScrewDrive + Video - PentaxForums.com.
I recently converted my DA* 200, which has been showing suspicious signs of impending SDM failure. To do the conversion you need an older Pentax DSLR, as you will learn in the thread linked above. As I recall, K-3 is too new; K-5II or older is OK. Once converted it should work on any Pentax body.
Focusing will of course be noisier than SDM. I have found that just how noisy depends on which camera body. Noisier on the K-5 than on the K-1, for example.
