Update - I pre-ordered before I knew it could possibly be salvaged, so I should
have a new one today - if 'dunkie' gets fixed and comes back certified/tested
100%, I may either return the new one or sell dunkie for a couple
hundred more than cleaning cost.

I thought it was dead for good, so if I can even just recoup some of the loss after
cleaning, I'm happy.

Perfectly calibrated/tested 70-200 for, say, $550 shipped, anyone?

Well, just called Tamron for an update on Dunkie - "not economically feasable to repair".

Didn't expect that, especially since it's fully functional, at least it seems so.

So, my replacement copy thta I ordered from Amazon, which doesn't AF beyond 2-3 shots, goes back for replacement, and Amazon should be shipping me a replacement to the replacement this week. I need to return the 'bad' replacement within 30 days.

Meantime, 'dunkie' should be here tomorrow, back from Tamron service, unserviced, but still usable.

Anyone want to make an offer for Dunkie?

If the electronic parts work, then presumably all that it needs is to be dissasembled, cleaned off and reassembled, maybe with some more grease in certain places. Probably someone could get a bargain here if they like tinkering

Someone has offered to take a shot at cleaning it out - so Dunkie may get a new
lease on life.

Meantime, its still limping along making pretty decent images - tried it out
on some standard IQ test subjects of mine today:

If you are able to get it cleaned up ... I say keep it ... if you know a lens that can go through what it has ... and still take images this good (with droplet marks all over the elements) ... you know it's a keeper.

So far the "dunkie" has worked better than the replacement lens you got that had to sent straight back.

Very sad about the K20D, but glad to hear that the stroller occupant is OK.

I've obsessed about dust inside lenses also. Then I ran across Jurgen Kreckel's medium format website. (He does - what I've heard - is a great job restoring medium format folders.) But, this is what I want to share from his site: a funky Zeiss Planar with a bug inside. (How did that happen!?) It still took a really nice photo.

Got this lens back from Eric a couple weeks ago - he was able to clean all the
elements except an internal assembly that couldn't be removed and taken apart.
It looks about 80% better than it did when I shine a flashlight through it.

Was able to take some more test shots today, and sharpness/contrast seem
pretty close to like-new, although I think I see some more flare than before the
accident, but only in flare-prone situations. Still much better than before Eric
did his thing. (Since he wasn't able to clean all the elements, he didn't charge
me anything, but I think I'm going to send him $ for the effort anyway.)

All of these are at 200mm, cropped between I'd say 25% and 50%, ISO 640
unless otherwise noted:

f/3.5 kid's getting yelled at, taken from level above

So sorry to hear about the lake mishap, but at least the Tamron looks to be AOK.

Thanks for your words about dust and how insignificant it is, especially in light of what you have experienced. I am now less concerned about those dust particles in some of my old M42 glass.

Jay ... I think you need to make up a name label for this lens ... it looks like one of those lenses you can't part with now (even though I know you buy/sell lenses more than anyone I know ... except Hin).
