Photography is not a source of income for me. I’m a financial engineer, I craft financial arrangements: bonds, pseudo-capital arrangements— a non-repetitive, mentally-taxing, but definitely boring job, even if I like it.

I need to do something beyond premiums and discount rates after work, and photography (or probably more like collecting lenses) becomes a hobby for me, it keeps my mind off from the 8 to 6 routine, and refreshes me. Even when I’m just staring at these beautiful pieces of glasses, or just mounting and shooting mostly uninteresting objects/subjects, funny, but they give me some peace, never mind if I have very limited time when I can actually use them extensively. But the fact that simply owning them can give ME some peace and happiness is a sound reason enough, IMO, to justify my “LBA”.

PS: [I also play, err, collect chess books and chess boards]

PS #2: I’m not really fond of superzooms. :P

Story of my life - trying to live and travel with LIMP (and mostly failing) (truly a first-world problem)

So uhm despite owning several nifty fifties as mentioned in my opening post, not to mention 16-50, 50-135, 70 ltd, during the lock down another member joined: DA* 55, so far its job is to photograph my walls and some random objects in the house. Why not, the other lenses are either too long, too heavy or too slow for that anyway :-)

Back at the start of the year I played around with a tiny little compact camera for a while, a 12 megapixel Canon A1200 that you can buy for spare change, and I liked the results so much that after a couple of weeks I found myself looking at my DSLR gear very differently. In fact, I came very close to giving up on DSLR photography completely and started considering APS-C compact camera options with decent lenses.

Instead, what I've done is cut my DSLR gear down to the bone. I'd had to stop using my Takumars because of eyesight troubles anyway, and now I've given them to a charity to hopefully make some money from. I've also got rid of the various other lenses that I was only using once a year at best anyway. So I now own:

The cheap plastic mount 18-55mm WR on my Samsung GX-10 version of the K10D.
The basic non-WR plastic mount 18-55mm on my K-S1.
Until a few days ago I also had an M200mm/4.0, but that's now going too. Oh, and I've also still got my Kodak Anastigmat 50mm/3.5 but I'm keeping that.

At some point later this year I'll probably move to either the 16-85mm or the 20-40mm on the GX-10, but I don't see myself ever going back to lugging around a bag full of different lenses again. I know that such a radical reduction in gear wouldn't be right for the majority of members here, but for me and where I am in my life at the moment, switching to carrying just one body and one lens has felt like a liberation.

No matter how many lenses I possess, I never sold any of them. Long before digital I used a Minolta MD 35 mm film system, I had an SR1, an XE7, an XD11 and 5 X700 bodies plus 20 different lenses, from 16 mm fisheye to 400 mm APO telephoto. Then I started using a Pentax 67 which I traded for a 67 II when it became available and acquired 11 lenses over the years, from a 45 mm wide-angle to an M* 300 mm telephoto. Ten years later I got a Pentax 645N film camera and purchased 9 A-series lenses over time. I started digital in 2007 with a Pentax K10 and 2 kit lenses, slowly evolving as technology evolved to a K20, a K5, a K3 and finally to a K1. I purchased various and numerous F, FA, DA and DFA lenses for the digital bodies as they became available. In 2017, I got a deal I couldn't pass up on a Pentax 645Z and I acquired 6 additional 645 FA lenses. Sooo ... I have made a quick inventory and I think I have 75 lenses in all. I may be some kind of a hoarder, but all of these tools get used in rotation and I swear none of this will ever leave my house.

I was starting to accumulate a lot of vintage lenses of various mounts (I also shoot Sony, so adapting there is easy). I did a Marie Kondo job on all my camera gear. Literally. Took everything out and put it on the big dining room table, sorted everything, and then looked at every item and asked myself "Why did I buy this?", "When was the last time I used it?", "When do I reasonably forsee myself using this again?" and "Did I get any real great photos with it, that I couldn't get with another lens?". After asking that, I'd say I cut my vintage lenses down by 2/3, keeping mostly just the SMC Pentax lenses, a Helios 44, and two R mount Leica lenses (which my next task is to do some comparison testing to determine if I'm keeping those). Sure, those lenses went to fund other purchases, but certainly the space I need to hold my gear is a lot smaller, and a lot more organized. I simply realized that I can't carry every lens I own with me, and I tend to be the type of person that keeps a packed gear backpack, and will mostly just grab that and go out, rather than pick and choose my lenses and create a kit for the day each time.

1) I hadda look up Marie Kondo
2) How dare you be organized and adult about your gear collection.
3) I'm so not doing that.

Thank you for your kind attention.

These are the lenses I confess to owning. There are more that I intend to sell. You count - if I don’t know the actual number I can’t confess the actual number.

K17/4 Fish Eye | K18/3.5 | K20/4 | K24/2.8 | K24/3.5 | K28/2 | K28/3.5 | K28/3.5 Shift | K30/2.8 | K35/2 | K35/3.5 | K50/1.2 | K50/1.4 | K50/4 Macro | K55/1.8 | K55/2 | K85/1.8 | K100/4 Bellows | K100/4 Macro | K105/2.8 | K120/2.8 | K135/2.5 | K135/3.5 | K 150/4 | K200/2.5 | K200/4 | K300/4 | K400/5.6 | K500/4.5 | K1000/8

It seemed like you own every K series lens ever made, so I checked. The following are still missing:

  • K 15/3.5
  • K 1000/8
  • K 1000/11 reflex
  • K 2000/13.5 reflex
I am not sure that the reflex lenses count. The other two are quite rare, so you are excused.

We salute you!

Look again. The Black Dragon is there

I own a couple of the zooms - 45-125/4 and 85-210/4,5 - but they all have zoom creep. I don’t have the K85/2.2 Soft or the 135-600 (I don’t want to pay $100 shipping from JAPAN) and I don’t care about the Reflex lenses.

Despairing of finding a good K15/3.5 I tool advantage of a great eBay price and bought an A15/3.5 (not shown as a lens I admit to owning, like the A50/1.2).

Click my link “Gear List” in my sig to see the full list.

I'm doing my best to not read anyone's list, for fear that I'll find some new object of obsession. FWIW, I'm completely unfamiliar with any Pentax glass newer than the A-series, so I don't own those or search for them.

My LBA started with the Takumar club here, so...

I'm also doing my best to not expand into any other system. I keep drooling over the digital 645...and then I click on something else. To that end, I'm saved by the dearth of Pentax retailers to go to and lay hands upon unfamiliar gear. So, in not counting, I'm keeping my semi-rational self in check.

THAT is a comprehensive list. You appear to have a soft spot for 135s. Looking at your Russian lenses, surprised to see no Jupiter-9, or maybe a Helios 44-K4.

Hit me up when you decide to part with the K24/2.8.
