Confession game: how many lenses do you have? Why do you keep them? Which was let go?

With the current lock-down order of the country I live (France), I actually have a lot of free time. As a father, my weekdays are almost full from early morning to mid-evening with kid duty - work - kid duty. Almost all weekend are spent for hiking, family outing, beaches, citywalk, etc. Now as everyone is at home 24/24, I have quite a lot of time, but I'm very bored, as I can't go out, not even taking my camera for a short walk-around. I get bored, so did some cleaning and re-arrangement today, and of course, looking at my lenses line up, and the conclusion is I have too many lenses. With my little time dedicated to photography, some of them are used just 2-3 times per year. So what do I have? I have 21 lenses, with a lot of overlapping, here they are:

- Super wide: DA 14mm, DA 15mm, DA 10-17mm
- Standard prime: DA 21, A28f2, Sigma Art 30, Pentax 35 Macro
- Standard zoom: 16-50, 16-85, 20-40
- Nifty fifty: F50 1.7, A50 Macro, K55, Helios 58, Super Takumar 50 1.4
- Telezoom: DA 50-135, 55-300 PLM
- Tele prime: DA 70, A 100mm 2.8
- 1.7 TC
- Recent acquisition: I created a thread not so long ago asking whether I should go for Tamron 70-200 and DA*200. You know what? I saw both of them at great price. Took both. Haven't decided yet which to let go. So yeah Tamron 70-200 and DA*200

Then I wonder why I have so many of them? Can't be sure. What I know as of now is I don't want to part with any of them. Optimization can obviously be done, for example I can easily sell the DA 14, the DA 16-50, 2 of the nifty fifty, and the Sigma, even some more, without really impacting my options. But each of them still brings something unique to the table. for example the 14mm is 2.8, excellent for churches or group of kids playing indoor. The 16-50 is much less used than 16-85 or 20-40, but sometimes it's very useful, wedding of a friends, for example. So all of them stay for now, and just hope the wife doesn't start to suspect anything.

Along the way, I also let go quite a few great lenses, notably the F100 macro, too big and heavy, and for occasional macro the A50 is much nicer, even if it's manual focus, and only 1:2. DA 40 limited, the focal length is odd and I almost never used it. K 35 f2, I don't really enjoy full manual, it's also quite big and heavy. K 28mm 3.5, same reasons, and now I have the A28 f2, which is almost like a limited, except for autofocus and the rubber ring. 18-135, as I got the 16-85 for a great price, and couldn't justify owning both of them. Tamron 17-50, for the same reason, it had to go the moment I got the Pentax 16-50. I once owned the very rare K18, but sold it here on the forum to fund my KP purchase by the time. And some less popular lenses ...

What about you?

Even more. Too many considering I am not even doing it professionally :/. I played around with 4 different systems but only two are really relevant to me. I own 6 digital bodies and a film one, out of which I am only using three. I would prefer not to count my lenses D:. At least I can be proud that I have been using almost all of them .

It's gets to a stage where we have to admit that we're also collectors. Stamps will never be used again but people still collect them. At least with lenses there's a potential use. And some of them are used a lot. But at the end of the day why break up a collection? Each acquisition has a story behind it.

______________________

why did I get them

the wife said I could - but she also said I had to haul them

I found most " experienced " or on sale

got hooked on limiteds

like the idea of fast lenses

wanted to have the ability to cover wide angel, macro, " normal " and telephoto

why do I keep them

I find uses for them and my wife says I can

I like to try to shoot wildlife and dabble with macro

one I grabbed to give me some reach when I try one of my SLR bodies the Vivitar Series One 70-210mm

Well I had a nice long post which just before posting, disappeared...so I'll be brief here.
K-mount, Q system, 645, 6x7 - total lenses - 100, sold off (various systems) 50, ready for immediate sale soon (I hope!), 13.

This doesn't include an assortment of older Minolta MC/MD and old Leica M39 lenses and from my father, as well as about 3 functioning lenses for my father's 4x5 camera.

I know, I have almost terminal LBA. Keep in mind that all of my Pentax gear was acquired from 2008 on.

Do I need all of those, yes generally I did and have used most of them. I did get some older film lenses with the purchase or two of a camera body. This stable of lenses spans the range for K-mount from 5.3mm to 560mm.

My most recent acquisitions, over the past year were: 645 FA 35, 645 FA 120, 6x7 Takumar 35(FE), HD 10-17FE, DFA28-105, Tamron Adaptall 63B 180mm.

Some of the unusual ones are pinhole lenses for Q, K, 645, and 6x7 mounts, the Lensbaby Achromat 64mm lens, a slew of UWA and FE(fisheye) lenses, and a number of oddball M42 lenses. The strangest one is a Nikkor F24mm f2.8 lens converted to K-mount.

Bottom line here is that for each and every Pentax lens I own, I always had a purpose in mind for it and a lot of the older lenses were fairly cheap.

I keep track of all of these in a spread sheet with a lot of data about each lens and s/n for safety purposes.

That's all I'll admit to now.

Edit: yikes I forgot one, I have this weird 645 Russian 500mm mirror lens, really weird.

That said, I'll probably hang on to the Taks and K series primes, because they're beautiful and fairly hard to re-acquire.

Some of the big zooms really have to go though....

My list is *silly* but I'm sure I'll be outdone.

Samyang 14
DA 15 SMC
Tamron Adaptal 17
M 20
Tokina 24 RMC
Kalt 28
Albinar 28
M 28 mk2
Sigma 28 EX DG
Kiron 28 f2
K 35 f2
M 35 f2.8
DA 35 f2.4
Tokina 35 f2.8 M42
M 40
DA 40 XS
M 50 1.4
M 50 1.7
F 50 1.7
DA 50 1.8
Sears branded Chinon 50 1.7
Chinon 50 1.9
Super Tak 55 f2 M42
M 85
Tamron Adaptall 90
Ricoh 105 Macro
DA 18-55 mk1
DA 18-135
Tokina 19-35
Tokina 28-70 f2.8-4
Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Ricoh 28-105 f4
DA 50-200

M42 for a screw mount kit I have that I never really use and should probably sell or do *something* with. That's also why I have the Adaptall glass that I actually really like. I also like 28's on crop and full frame both so there's a few there. Same with the 50's. The 24 was a freebee for buying the K 35 and I should really sell both and the others; I don't really care for the focal length on crop or full frame as it feels like a weird compromise more than 28 or 40 on full frame and a bit too tight on crop. Odd but that's how I am. The Ricoh 28-105 came with a camera from ebay and the 50-200 sounded good at the time but I don't really love the thing and cannot make it sing. So about half a dozen to sell. I'd like an M 120 and maybe an AF version of the Tamron 90 f2.5, both mainly for portraits. Which I rarely do! But maybe that would change. I could probably live with the DA 15, 18-135, and F 50 1.7 and call it a day but that sounds boring.

My list is even sillier ... over 100 at last count! I'll not bother listing them all, but many of them are used frequently and many of them are acquisitions from 30-50 years ago that I've got used to having around

Apart from a couple of "serious" lenses, like my recently purchased s/h 10-20mm Sigma, almost all of them are "working" examples, not pristine "collector" items, of older prime lenses that I never had opportunity to try when they were "current" but have been able to find at "sensible" prices so's I can play with them as the mood takes me. I enjoy giving myself a "one-lens-challenge" and trying to produce something worthwhile without the flexibility of a modern auto-everything zoom. I don't always succeed, but there's an enormous amount of satisfaction when I do
