LOTS, but it isn't because I'm a collector. I have a large set in part because I don't use adaptors. My series or systems of lenses include:

a) Pentax manual focus
b) Pentax AF film era
c) Pentax AF digital era
d) Pentax 645 manual focus
e) Pentax 645 AF
f) Nikon manual focus
g) Nikon AF film era
h) Nikon AF digital era

Why haven't I 'thinned the herd'? Each camera system has it's pros and cons and depending on what I'm shooting or what I enjoy shooting, I'll pick up that system. Currently I mostly use 'e' and 'h' but I often teach with or lend gear in the less used categories.

As one addict to another: so true...!!!

---------- Post added 03-21-2020 at 01:51 PM ----------

This is a brilliant, hysterical and truly entertaining thread - and my props and cheers to Bui for originating it! Just reading through it - and then re-reading - makes me feel immensely better about my own occasional forays into buying-lenses-for-one-reason-which-seemed-good-at-the-time-but-later-wondering-why-the-hell-I-did-it with the so-called benefits of rational hindsight.

In my own case, I will only mention the digital lenses I either have now, own currently, and use - or have pruchased or acquired but then disposed or or sold. I'm leaving out a few years of analog shooting, in the dark pre-digital ages, where I had a handful of fine Takumars and SMC Pentax lenses for a variety of Spotmatics and MX's. (Those included a fine f/1.4 60mm - a 35mm which was my favorite - an outrageous 24mm - a 105mm and a 135mm. But all of a previous and ancient age.) But, back to the matter at hand---

Lenses I currently own and use:
DA 21 Ltd
DA 40 Ltd
DA 70 Ltd
DA 10-17
FA 50 (the f/1.7)

Lenses I currently own but don't use:
F 35-80 (the f/4 - which came on an old P30T I inherited)

I'm stunned to realize that my current list is almost laughably short: 'only' 6 lenses. (What is wrong with me?)

Lenses previously owned but sold, recycled or otherwise let go of:
DA 18-55 II (the kit lens on my old K200d and quite a fine one, actually)
DA 55-300 PLM (a great telephoto zoom which I acquired with the best of intentions before realizing that I just don't shoot enough telephoto)
Tamron 17-50 (the f/2.8 - also for my old K200d - and a significant upgrade over the 18-55)
Tamron SP AF 90mm macro (the f/2.8 version - one of the great all time macro lenses which I just never seemed to use)

And, okay, why not...Lenses on the short list of I-should-get-one-of-these-someday-soon:
DA 20-40 (just to see, if it's as great as everyone claims)
DA 15 (the closest to the old analog 24mm Takumar I used to shoot with)

So much for lens confessions....is it time for a parallel spinoff thread for camera body acquisitions now?

Reading through the posts is dangerous for those with LBA - it becomes a shopping list. For instance, I have just learned that Sigma made a very desirable thing they called the EX 180mm f/3.5 Macro. Now I want one...

anyone could start one for all Pentax Camera bodies

or anyone has my permission to " hijack " my thread:

to discuss the film era Pentax SLR camera bodies options if you want to

I absolutely love this lens. Unfortunately it's pretty specialized and I don't have much use for it other than macro but I do macro quite a lot. If you can one, if, buy it. When I bought mine there were a few copies on eBay and a few on buyee.jp where I bought mine. Looking now there's none. I'm hesitant to say that a lens is "rare" but I'd definitely say that this one is uncommon.

it's one of the reasons I bought the Irix 150/2.8 Macro - it's devilishly-good also, and almost 180mm....

I like the look of the 150, especially the 2.8 vs 3.5 but it's such a small difference and then there's the AF vs MF difference...

Having looked back through the thread, I forgot to add that I had a Rikenon 55mm f1.2 which was stuck wide open. I fixed the aperture but I think when I reassembled the optics, I placed the optics incorrectly because it was very soft when focused. I sold it and regret it but I bought for only $100 and sold it for more so it's not all bad.

One lens I do want is a Sigma 70mm f2.8 Macro.

A quick physical count of lenses used on K-Mount cameras came out at ~32 lenses, plus five converted/adapted ones which actually see some use. There are less lenses in various other - historical - mounts. The vast majority are KA-mount or newer lenses, I like to be able to use all exposure modes. My first Pentax camera was a K-5 in 2011, which amounts to a bit more than 4 lenses acquired per year, including the few ones, which I have sold again.

The 'active' ones officially covering 35mm format include
HD D FA 15-30/2.8
HD D FA 28-105/3.5-5.6
Sigma 70-200/2.8 DG OS HSM

Samyang 12/2.8 Fish-Eye
Samyang 14/2.8
Voigtländer Color Skopar 20/3.5
A 24/2.8
F 28/2.8
FA 31/1.8
FA 35/2.0
F 50/1.7
FA 50/1.4
D FA 50/2.8 Macro
FA 77/1.8
Elicar 90/2.8 Macro
D FA 100/2.8 Macro WR
Zeiss Jena 135/3.5 MC
A 200/4.0

And the 'active' APS-C-only ones, which get regular reinforcements form some of the above

Sigma 8-16/4.5-5.6
HD DA 18-50mm/4-5.6
DA 18-135/3.5-5.6
DA 55-300/4.5-6.3 PLM

Samyang 8/3.5 Fish-Eye
HD DA 15/4.0
HD DA 40/2.8

And TCs
HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter
Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x Teleplus with SDM contacts

To be sold
Tamron AF 17-35/2.8-4.0, most times used the Voigtländer 20/3.5 instead and now I have the 15-30
Kenko MC7 2x TC (A-contacts), intended for macro, but it's too dark and I now use the HD DA 1.4x
Makinon 24/2.8 (A-contacts), somewhat de-centered and odd colors, and I bought a nice A24/2.8 since
Maybe also the Kenko 1.4x TC, the Sigma 70-200 doesn't properly focus with either TC
Maybe the HD DA 40/2.8, doesn't really click with me, but I'll give it some more time

Already sold
DA 70/2.4, after I bought the FA77
DA 35/2.4, after I bought the FA35
DA 50/1.8, after I bought the K-1 - kept the F50/1.7
Tamron AF 70-210, after I bought the HD DA 55-300WR

Passed on
FA 50/1.7
M 135/3.5
My first DA 18-135
HD DA 55-300WR
... and the 8-16mm needs to move here, I'm afraid. Haven't seen it in a while.

I'm currently fairly happy with this set, but of course there are always some interesting lenses out there. Why do i keep them? Because I can, and because all of them are bought with at least a specific use in mind with not too much redundancy. I could easily do without the F28 or FA35, given that I have the FA31, but the FA35 just feels right on the KP and the F28 fits nicely into a '49mm' kit, which the 31 doesn't - a lot of my primes share the 49mm filter thread (15, 28, 35, 40, 50, 50 Macro, 77, 100 Macro, 135), so no fiddling with step-up rings or anything! But then for NDs, i can simply stop down the 18-135 or 28-105 and be happy with just one lens and a matching filter instead in most cases, leaving just the shallow DoF situations or IR to cover.

Far from being in the top league here, but I have 18 lenses (all but two Pentax original). I'm not a collector, the ones I don't use I keep because I think I will use it. Maybe not today, but soon...

My collection is very tiny, its mostly Tamron Adaptalls as I run a tange of bodies from the big 5 from the golden age. Oldest camera is 59 and last one is 85. To have OEM in the correct period for every camera would be prohibitively expensive and most would get little or no use. I cut my lenses down to just what I will use.

Tamron Adaptall I series
24mm
135mm
300mm
35-105 zoom (clunky and mad but has character)

Tamron Adaptall II series
80-200mm zoom
35-80mm zoom

Minolta MD
35mm
135mm

Nikon
135mm non AI (pre Nikon branding)
35-105 zoom

Olympus
35-70mm zoom

Then there are the 50s which each camera is displayed with...

By and large whatever the camera was sold with as is base lens for its day with a few that have the primo 50mm so thats 12x 50mm lenses.

I have sufficient Adaptall adaptors to rig any camera with a minimum of two adaptalls for a shooting day. The Minoltas dont much like Adaptalls and can play up a bit hence they have their own lenses.

I may unload the 300mm as its had next to no use and go either VERY long say a 500 or shorten it a bit to 200......still deciding.

I neglected to mention in my post of lenses that I haven't let a lens go in decades. I am a hoarder when it comes to lenses.

There were a few back in the eigthies, but nothing since then:
  • SMC Pentax M 50mm f/1.7 - sold with the Pentax MX that it came with, but I got another one two years ago
  • SMC Pentax M 40mm f/2.8 - a bit weird, traded in for an SMC Pentax A 50mm f/2.8 macro
  • Petri 135mm f/2.8 - not very good, traded in for an SMC Pentax M 200mm f/4
  • Zeiss 120mm f/5.6 S-Planar - sold with the Hasselblad 500C that it came with, needed funds for an SMC Pentax A 400mm f/5.6
  • Soligor 90-230mm - sold with the Pentax SP1000 that it came with
  • Takumar 50mm, can't remember which one - sold with the Pentax SP1000
  • Third party 28mm in M42 mount, can't remember which one - sold with the Pentax SP1000

It's the first lens I bought used. I use it for birds too.

I feel like I'm an imposter here, since I don't own that many lenses...

I currently own

FA20-35
DFA 28-105
DA* 60-250 (modified for full frame)
Vivitar cheapo 70-210 F4-F5.6 fully manual (worthless so I keep it)

FA43 Limited
M50 f1.4 (never gets used)
FA77 Limited
DFA 100 macro WR

The thing is, with all the lenses I get to test while performing reviews, my "LBA" is satiated without actually having to purchase all those lenses. For instance I'm currently testing the DFA 70-210 F4, and the Laowa 60mm ultra macro. Fine lenses to play with. Before that I had fun with the 10-17 fisheye. So I can explore and, sometimes, decide to keep a lens. For instance the jury is still out whetherr the DFA 70-210 ought to replace the 60-250.
