You can't even find a DSLR kit these days with a 50 prime as the kit lens.
Nikon offers the D610 and Df with 50/1.8 and Pentax offers the KP with 50/1.8; on the mirrorless side, Nikon and Canon are the only holdouts without prime lens kits, but I get your drift. A cheap zoom as kit lens has been the in-store norm for about three decades.

with a throng bias toward the 20~40.
If one must have a "throng" bias, that would be my choice as well.

I understand perfectly and my order of usage would be similar to yours if my only goal was making (saleable) images. I know I’m an edge case but a fair number of PF members are similar. It’s a hobby, like making furniture with hand tools or making needlepoint pillows and cushions, or doing counted cross stitch, or embroidered pillowcases and sheets.

More than half my actual use is K series manual lenses on K-1 because that is what I like to do. Another 20% or so is film using cameras ranging from Asahiflex to MZ-S. I can fix many faults (PF) in LR fairly easily - in some cases easier than fixing CA from DFA*50/1.4 - or deal with them in advance by choosing not to shoot birds on branches against bright sky with old lenses.

Truth told, the rest is snapshots using KP and DA Limiteds, with a strong bias toward the 20~40.
I was just thinking about that lens. The 20-40 would be better match for the 55-300 than the 21 and not a lot heavier.

You guys wear throngs? Are they comfortable?

Do they come in camo?

Fair bit larger though but a very nice lens just the same.

Camo throngs are great for shooting from a blind. You should try them some time.

Well sometimes it works out, I just scored a really nice Minolta 28mm for .99p on eBay. Hows that for cost conscious wide angle

I have noticed that over the last couple of month, asking prices have gone up for Pentax gear even on the goodwill site. Having said that, I did pick up a nice Pentax 70-210 A series in very clean condition for $33 including shipping. Maybe people have more time on their hands lately to browse on line.
I have a modest collection of kerosene and carbide lamps especially railroad and mining lamps. Two years ago you could find these dirt cheap on eBay usually I was sole bidder, then suddenly I was getting outbid every time. I stopped collecting so hopefully the fad will go out of fashion and prices will drop. Pentax items might follow suit.
