Pentax-DA 55-300 Lens Hood

Why is there a small slide-off tab covering an opening on the PH-RBI 58mm lens hood for the Pentax-DA 55-300 f4-5.8 lens?
I've enjoyed this lens for quite some time, but have no idea what this small optional hood opening is used for.

The focusing band is located outside of the hood area. The hood's window is for times when or if rotational filters are used, such as Vmax911 says- a polarizing filter, a graduated neutral density filter, etc. A very handy feature when needed. Pentax may have been the first with this idea, while more recently I think some others have adopted the design. I remember many years back when it seemed like a novel but useful new feature.

To be more specific, when attached the hood is well ahead of the manual focus wheel.

Ahhhhhh! Thanks for the answer - Handy for adjustable filters like the variable-ND I recently purchased for this lens (but had not yet used!)
Thanks All for the replies!

NEARLY all Pentax lenses of recent years have this, ... apart from the new DFA 70-210.

Oh, but not the DA Limiteds, ... and the DFA 15-30 (which doesn't take filters), and the DA 10-17, ...

Well, quite a lot of the recent lenses have them.

Pentax FA 28-105 F3.2-4.5 from 2001 has it, it is one of the earliest I guess.

Simple but effective access to a filter. Nice touch.
