Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM

hi i was looking at this
Pentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM lens on the B&H site, the have a disclamer that it is not campatable with full frame, want to use with my k1. according to your campatability chart and it is. also listed as ff in the lens review. SMC Pentax-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM

so will it work for the k1 ?? this is the reply i got from b &H
Thank you for contacting the Sales Department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio.

The rear element is the size of a cropped sensor not a full frame. It will work fine with the K20 not the K1
thanks for any help

DA lenses are usually, per name, lenses made especially for crop sensor cameras, but this one, along with a few others, has been declared fullframe compatible by Ricoh themselves. So you can use this lens without any limitations on a K-1.

Other lenses that are also DA lenses, but officially fullframe compatible, include the SMC Pentax-DA* 200mm F2.8 ED [IF] SDM and HD Pentax-DA 560mm F5.6 ED AW

Works just fine on the K-1. It is one of the few DA lenses officially designated as FF compatible by Ricoh.

The lens is closely based upon the older FA*300mm f4.5 which is a FF lens. Although I use K-7/K4 APS-C camera bodies, I personally bought the FA*300mm f4.5 instead of the DA*300 f4 because of the weight. The FA*300mm f4.5 is smaller and there are little difference in IQ IMHO.
If you have any doubt on the DA*300mm f4, consider to purchase 2nd hand a good quality FA*300 f4.5 from a reliable supplied (eg Keh.com, Adorama Used, B&H used).

My 5 cents... hoping that it may help.

It is magical on full frame. Really beautiful IQ. You don't lose much when you use it with the 1.4X teleconverter either, although obviously that means going to crop frame.

I concur with the above. This is a great lens and it goes well on the K-1.

It is fully compatible on FF. On the K1, Pentax have two sets of lens correction available for this lens, one for FF and one for crop.

Some lenses with DA designation cover full frame. DA is not designed for FF, Pentax was just under pressure to tell us that some tele designs cover FF - otherwise no fixed focal length telegenstes would exist for FF. There isomer work to do here by Pentax. In this forum many members are happy to see that some DA glass covers FF, read the fine print carefully and you will know what to expect.
