You could "rent" it from Amazon
At the moment I have the Sigma 17-50 in my cart at Amazon.
I'm in the final stages of convincing myself to hit the buy button.
I like the idea of the Pentax 16-85, but in practicality it doesn't do anything my Sigma 18-250 doesn't.

Edit: I just took a second look at the test results on opticallimits.com (formerly photozone). If I have to stop down to f/4 or below to even get into the "good" range at the borders the f/2.8 really isn't any benefit over the Pentax.

My brain hurts.

" to rent or not to rent, that is the question . "

[ sorry bill ]

certainly an individual decision

if I was trying to decide between A and B and had neither

and could rent both at a " reasonable " cost for a short time ( 3-4 days )

plus discounts to help with shipping costs

then I take a look and decide whether it is worth the cost

it might not be

but I like exploring options and then deciding

.

Of the three contenders, Lensrentals has only the DA 16-85 & DA 20-40 in stock.

As an aside, they do have the new DFA 70-210/4 in stock. I'm a little bit surprised.

There is a thought floating around that there might be an updated DA* 16-50/2.8 coming with the K-New. Maybe wait?

Have you seen Heie's review of the 16-85 - worth a read if you're considering it: HD Pentax-DA 16-85mm F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR Reviews - DA Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

If you don't feel it would do much more than the 18-250, maybe that's another excuse for the 20-40. It's different enough to justify alongside the 18-250 - faster, smaller compact package - as well being a Limited and WR.

Also, have you considered renting? Sorry - I couldn't resist

Thanks for that, Robert. That pretty much seals the deal.
The Sigma is out. The Pentax is in.

Glad to be of help. When I was recently looking for a walk around WR zoom, the 16-85 was a pretty attractive option - though I couldn't find one within my budget.

funny thing about the 20-40mm: when I was looking/lusting for one, I bought a copy of the 35 Macro Ltd and that solved my issue...

the 35 Ltd is a desert-isle lens...
For FF I agree completely. However for APSc mine is the DA15 limited.
