A couple of pics of the new 85mm f1.4

Ricoh Imaging has the new PENTAX 85mm on display at their Shinjuku showroom, which opened yesterday after being closed for two months.

The lens is larger than I expected, but feels good and balances very well on the K-1. Focus is quick enough and very silent. The motor "feels" and "sounds" (nearly silent) very different than the old SDM types. I don't know if it makes sense to say, but the AF "feels" more robust and confident than previous AF motors.

The overall fit, feel and construction is nothing short of spectacular. The output is sublime. This clearly is the definition of a premium product and is easy to see why the high cost is worth it. I think this is a lens that will cause people to give PENTAX a good look.

Here are two photos of the lens. Anyone is free to use or re-post them as desired. Enjoy!

Wow what a big hood! Reminds me of the thick substantial hoods on the FA* series

Maybe the hood can be left off for interior shots. I would be interested to see how it performs without it.

Jeez, people complaining about the size of the hood. It's not nearly as large as the one on my 300 f/2.8...

Weighty Eighty?

Looking forward to having one. I hope I don’t miss what I’ve sold to get it.

A man set out on a hike carrying the K1, DFA 24-70, DFA*70-200, DFA 150-450, DFA 15-30, DFA 50, and DFA*85. He died.

Must have been crushed by the weight of his own self confidence that he could carry all that equipment.

No tripod foot like the 105 from Sigma :-)
Your models will not appreciate the large front lens and the works will notice the big lens. Good reason to get/keep the 77 as well.

I always liked the metal hood of the FA* 85mm 1.4. I assume this one is plastic.

Anyone using multiple studio lighting will appreciate that hood for sure.

LOL!

I don't own a bag big enough to carry all that anyway. And even if I did I wouldn't take any of them on a hike. I would take the DFA28-105 for the K-1, and the DA10-17, DA* 11-18 and DA 55-300 PLM on the KP, or just use crop mode on the K-1.

Why didn't he add also DA560?
