Any New Buzz on Upcoming DA 17-70?

I've seen various opinions on whether the upcoming DA 17-70 will replace the current kit lens, the DA 16-45 or neither. Any new info (especially backed with actual data)?

Thanks,

Jer

Hey it maybe just a rebranded Sigma 17-70.

If any of you were following up on Olympus' large press release, their new Olympus ZD 70-300 f4-5.6 is rumoured to be just a rebranded Sigma 70-300. It even has the same Macro switch on the side.

Anyhow if indeed the DA 17-70 is just a rebrand of the sigma, its probably very good news. The Sigma 17-70 is rates very well on image quality and can macro down to 1:2.3 which is another bonus.

As for images of the lens, I'm guessing we'll just have to wait till perhaps the latter part of the year to find out.

Whats also interesting is the DA* 55mm f1.4 SDM they got listed on the roadmap. Just short of an 35mm equilivalent of 85mm, are they looking to bring the good ol' 85 prime back?

Hey, Pete - not a bad idea. I've got an A* 85/1.4 - a lens like that keyed to the digital sensor would be cool.

Flip side of that coin...from the Hoya Pentax merger, it could be a Pentax-Tokina co-developed lens?

That'd be pretty stupid - that's a 140-600 equivalent.

Doubtful it is a rebranded Sigma. Pentax has no history of working with Sigma. They co-develop with Tokina, and there has been some rebadged Tamrons in the FAJ line, but nothing I can recall with Sigma.

I've read on other forums the Sigma 17-70 may have some QC issues. Seems to be typical Sigma. If you get a good one it is a fine lens, but you may need to try a few samples to get a good one.

It seems most sigma lenses have QC issues. Sigh ...

QC is an old Sigma problem.. though when you get a good one, they can be very good and I have had little problem returning a bad copy... but it is still a hassle..

Hey Joele,
Not to hijack this thread, but what did you think of the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO you just sold. Do you have any direct experience comparing it to the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 Di?

Thanks

Well first I had a good copy of the 24-70, no QC issues.. LOL

As for overall IQ it seemed very good to me, a bit on the bulky side for me though, I am used to using my Pentax primes that are all tiny.

I have never owned any other 2x-7x f2.8 zooms before so I couldn't compare it to the Tamron, Tokina or Pentax zooms in that class.. (I prefer to use primes to be honest..)
