135 3.5 Variants

All, I am curious about the varients of the m42 mount Pentax 135mm 3.5 lenses. What are the different variants? What are their differences? And how do you tell them apart? tia

Hi,

Have you checked out the descriptions in the Lens Review Database?

Pentax M42 Screwmount Telephoto Primes - Lens Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Two major variants of the Takumar 135/3.5 are listed; these include seven 'sub variants'. The lenses are listed in the order of increasing focal lengths.

Optically, there are two major types (5-element and 4-element); here are a few links:

Yes I did. And beside the note about the number 4 on the aperture ring it doesn't give any other indication for determining between the black version 1 or version 2.the SMC is the version 2 so that's easy enough. And no comment on the optical performance differences between the Super Tak Version 1 and Super Tak Version 2.

Sorry, I'm not clear on the lenses to which you are referring -- are you trying to distinguish between the Super Takumar "model 1" and Super Takumar "model 2"? The other variants are distinguished by their engraved name or, in the case of the Takumar, by their chrome/black or all-black finish.

I've only had experience with one of the Super Taks, so I can't speak authoritatively on their differences. However, the data tables do provide some distinguishing characteristics:

Super Tak Model 1
- 350 g
- "Fine" ribs on the aperture ring (see the picture)
- Product code 354 or 43540 (usually engraved on the underside of the Auto-Manual switch)

Super Tak Model 2
- 343 g
- "Coarse" ribs on the aperture ring
- Product code 43541
- No numeral '4' on the aperture ring

Regarding optical performance, I don't have any comparative information at hand. The user reviews in the database are a good source, but of course would require reading through them and sifting out the specific comments or ratings.

Do have a specific lens in hand, or are you thinking of getting one?

I have a range of them. My subjective preference is for the earlier ones but it is likely to be as much for the less coatings rather than for the optical formula. It could also be an emotive choice - something special about using lovely old glass - the older the better.

I have a version 1 (5 elements/4 groups) and a later Super-Multi-Coated one (4 elements). The former is soft (could be a bad example, for whatever reason). The S-M-C one is very sharp, even wide-open. Both are beautifully made and a joy to focus (even despite my having non-ideal vision).
