Some one on craigslist is offering to trade in their SMC-M 50 F2 prime lens for a SMC-DA 18-55 kit lens. Since I already have a Sigma 18-200, I can part with my kit.

Does anyone here have this lens?

If so, what are your thoughts?

Market for M 50 f/2 is between $25 - $45, market for kit is $40 - $75.
(But I'd rather own the M 50 f/2!

i've talked with the guy last week, maybe two, and at first i thought it was a good trade but ya then i checked ebay for the 50 f2 hehe

I have an M50 f/2 and its decent. That said, if you aren't in a rush then for the amount your kit lens would go for used (if you can find a buyer...) it might be tempting to sell the kit lens and wait for an A50 f/2 or f/1.7 or an M50 f/1.7 to show up on the used market. Those 3 lenses seem to sell in the ~$40-70 range and are either a bit faster or would give you aperture control through the camera body. Even an M42 mount 55mm f/1.8 plus a new threadmount adaptor from Henry's would be in roughly the same price range.

The 50mm f/2 lens series was used as the kit lens on so many Pentax film cameras that they show up on the used market in good condition pretty often.

Maybe at f8 the M 50 f2 is ok but at wider apertures it really does fall apart towards the edges. The f1.7 50 is much, much better, and so accessible price-wise, that I wouldn't give the f2 a single thought. (I have both, and an M1.4.)

Overall I would certainly rather have the kit lens than the 50 f2; I would rather have it in fact than the 50 f1.7 - but the 50 1.7 is wonderful for those low-light or narrow DOF occasions when you really want it, or when you don't need AF and you have plenty of time to sort out the exposure.

Don't dismiss the kit lens - it gives a better combination of reasonable quality with lightness and compactness over a useful range than anything else around, IMHO. There are many occasions when I would hate to be lumbered with the size and weight of an 18-200, leaving aside the optical compromises of a zoom with such a wide range.

Just my view ...
