Looking 4 a review on the Rokinon Auto Zoom 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Macro

I landed this lens for 20.00 on eBay. I truly didn't need it, bit I want to play around with something different. I looked around for a review on this lens but came up empty. I'm not expecting anything great from this lens but for 20.00 dollars I thought it would be fun.

Has anyone had experience with this lens?

This is the sellers photo

Hi kevinWE,

Samyang is the only 'Korean' company that produces their lenses, but distributes them, in different parts of the world, under different names.
One of the most famous is Rokinon, but also Walimex and so on. Not much known about this lens you can find some news at this link: Cimko and others lens
or Marexar

Cheers, Mario

It might be like one of the 28-80 3.5-4.5 lenses in this list.

Here is where it gets interesting: The lens shown above has a "Made in Japan" label. There is a good chance that this lens has no Samyang genes at all: Rokina vs. Rokinon - Past vs. Present

BTW, apparently the same lens existed with other badge names too:
  • MC Auto Zoom CPC CCT 28-80mm Macro 1:3.5-4.5
  • Gemini Macro Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 MC [caution: a different version of this lens exists under the very same name]
  • Hanimex MC Auto Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro
  • MC Hanimex Auto Zoom 28-80mm 1_3.5-4.5 Macro
  • Marexar-CX Zoom 1:3.5-4.5 f=28-80mm Multi-Coated
  • MC Rokinon Auto Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro
  • MC Sakar Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro [2 variants with different rubber]
  • MC Soligor Zoom Macro 28-80mm C_D F:3.5-4.5
  • MC Sun Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro
  • MC Sun Zoom Lens 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro
  • MC TOU/Five Star Auto Zoom 28-80mm 1.3.5-4.5 Macro
Out of this list I think Sun was the only company that designed and produced lenses. Therefore my guess is that the "MC Rokinon Auto Zoom 28-80mm 1:3.5-4.5 Macro" was made by Sun in Japan.

At the time this lens was made (presumably early 80ies), Sigma and Tokina had there own designs which in same cases also appeared in rebranded variants. However, the vast majority of the no-name 28-80 3.5-4.5 can be traced down to a Makinon design, a Cimko design, the above mentioned Sun and another one, which I still need to find out who made it.

You'll have fun I'm sure it's not better or worse than many other lens, often these are formulas already tried and tested and sold under other different names or brands.
Which translated means that it won't be a star but not even a glass bottom.

Found it! But it doesn't say much about his performance. Rokinon Auto Zoom MC Macro 28-80mm f/3.5(4.5)

Can you ask the seller for information? Here

Have fun!

As I said the optical scheme might be different but the essential data are those and who can say who copied the scheme? Here another example

Tamron AF 28-80 f:3.5 5.6

Bye Mario

I have the Tokina AT-X 28-85 3.5 attached to my KP right now. I find my AT-X usable for most walk around applications, it doesn't set the world on fire but I can grab some keepers with it. I'm hoping the Rokinon performs at least as well as the Tokina, if so, I'll keep it around as a spare for a cheap walk around'er when needed.
